Hi there!

We're looking to move out to Mercer Island from Seattle, and we just love the woodsy feel of East Mercer Way, and the small neighborhoods just off the road. However, I'm conscious that most of those streets aren't connected to the main neighborhood 'grid', and worried that E Mercer Wy itself doesn't look like a good road for smaller kids to walk or bike along - and there's no bus service. So for all the great parks and trails, and after-school activities, it seems we'd have to drive our kids anywhere they want to go - which detracts a little from the close-in-but-outdoors lifestyle we aspire to.

Can anyone comment on family life off of E Mercer Wy? How do kids get around? How safe is the main road for children to walk? All input gratefully received!

Many thanks, SG

Hello.

We live on Mercer Island. I would agree that if you live off of E. Mercer you will drive to mostly everything. With that being said, 60% of island residents do the same. Most of my children's friends do not live on flat streets. They live on steep hills or dead end streets by the lake. We meet at parks to ride bikes and other things like that. The nice thing about the island is that everything is only 10 mins.

Thanks for sharing your experience WaFamily. Does anyone else have any insight into that edge of the island? I'd love to get more opinions.

Knowing a few people who live along E Mercer and going often to their homes, I would say it's not a walkable area at all. Very many blind curves with cars that like to drive fast. And I wouldn't want my young children to bike along there. It is a popular bike route but mainly by those who use the island as a training and exercise route. I would say if park activities for kids are important and you want to walk there, I'd buy a house near the parks.

There's great bus service from the Park & Ride to Bellevue and Seattle, just not within the island. If you want scenic hills and water views, and some of the best schools in the country, driving the kids around seems like a minor inconvenience.
