I lived in Kent, Skyway, Tukwila, Federal Way, and a lil stint in Central District. What are these places like? What are the demographics?

I'm a little confused too because my family is poor. My mother was on Section 8 and we had all the public assitance you can think of in Atlanta yet I don't remember it being that bad in Seattle. We only could afford apartments but I don't remember it being as bad as it was down here.

I would really appreciate responses.
There's tons of black people in Seattle. I know all 7.

JOKE!

But seriously, as I understand it vis a vis Seattle and race relations, King County cops don't quit. Even when a young brothas legit.

Default One needs to hold true to oneself !!!!!

C'est Moi: Said....

ultimately, i just did not give a $h!t and realized if someone wasn't interested in me because of the way i sounded or the way i dressed, they weren't people i was interested in getting to know. that holds true to this day.

also, i LOVE what that person said about hugging your mother. that's so right on!

Unhappy Not Black Enough - Hmmmm

It's really a shame because many of us Aftican Americans who were born in the south and who were fortunate enough to move to northern cities for better job and an advancement in education are really talked about when we return to our native birthplace. I've been told by my own cousins in the south that I am "too proper". What is too proper? I just advanced my education and learned to speak good english. Now it's almost as if I'm an outsider. I'm a true believer of when in Rome do as the Romans do. I do like to learn as much as I can about the people who live in the areas I live or travel and has learned to be accepting of people for their differences even if I disagree with their thoughts, ideas or values. Besides, that's what makes each of us different and I think thats quite appealing.

This kind of generalization is "Kind of narrow minded"

I'd say you were born there because thats where your mom was. Unfortunately I can't give you a good soul searching answer as I'm just learning about Seattle myself.

However I can say that the whole concept of not being black enough goes entirely over my head. It's just the pigment of your skin. I just find it strange some groups of people identify more with that than they do a particular belief system or even sports teams. I can't understand ebonics well though I try to treat others how I'd like to be treated, even if they sound different.

After coming back from a trip in Seattle for 7 days to find a place to live for my upcoming move I did find one relevant piece of information: If the bums can afford to live there, so can I

Stay as you are, no one has to lower them self to be accepted by those that expect you to change to be like THEM !
..........................

I don't get it ??

Why you all talk about " black and they were the whitest people i've ever seen " Man..I don't know who you are, but people are people any way you look at them, there are those unfortunate people that don't have a good education nor speck good English ( as some say here, " Proper" or " white english" ) that's their misfortun. For those that speack PROPER Englsh ( all colors) it's only a mater of speaking a language CORRECTLY. Some people need to get out of there little boxes.

Tray travaling to a forign country or two, and then make fun of the people in another country about the way they speack.......and see how stuped you will LOOK !!

For the person that posted, from San Diego....

Not all people that live around the Seattle area are Loggers and have old cars in the back yards......nor are the a bunch of hiks !! ether, that's just some tuped mith, from those in the south that probably have never been to Whashington State before.

Most people around Seattle are rather wealthy and have pretty nice homes, ( mater of fact some are very RICH ) and yes some not so much......well HELLO, thats life you get waht you workd for, No one ows you any thing !!
There is not much loging going on thes day, there is more small businesses and industry, shoping malls, and the big Bowing airplain fabracation company makes 1000's of peole REAL GOOD money as well as Micro Soft ( you know Bill Gates) big money there too, as well as a large military & Navy bass like San digo has.

Yes there are still some farms left around Seattle, WHY ?
Because it was all farms before the city people spread out of the city and leaveld the good fertal farm land to build large modern suberbian neagborhoods, shopping malls and more car dealer lots and small industry, motels, fast food, parking lots, and so much more. Now the farms are all going fast, to over peopulation and subreban sprall. Cratting local grown food prices to go up littel by little.

Just to clear the air a little.
Thank you !
Peace

Seattle has a reputation of being a very good place for unwed mothers to live. I only assumed that you had no present dad, because you only mentioned your mom. Things may not have been that bad where you lived, because your mom got better benefits at the time. Obviously, since you moved to Atlanta, she was not happy there herself.

I learned that some people are just going to clown me about sounding "white" when I talk, no matter what, not just from other blacks either. I have been clowned by some white people as well. I learned that some people are going to clown me no matter what because the way I am goes beyond their own scope of what they think I should be(or what people who look like me should be). To some people, I am hard to understand. I have a friend from California I met when I was a college freshman. I was basically a nerdy, intellectual type. I did get clowned by some of the students. According to my friend, this was the reason I caught crap: It wasn't a matter of whether or not they liked me any less than the other black students, but they were more familiar with the blacks who lived up to the "stereotypical" black youth. I was an intellectual and had different interests and some of the students didn't know how to deal with a black man who was like me. In a nut shell, my friend told me it was their inability to understand me and take me as I was. He had a point. His advice was to realize that some people are just going to hate on me simply because they don't know how to do anything else. Even at the college level I was made fun of somewhat. I just learn to be stubborn and confident in who I am. Alot of that crap involving making fun of blacks who are considered to talk "white" isn't just something you find with blacks. Sometimes there are white people who will make fun. I should know because I experienced it. I like the way I am.

When I tell people I'm from Washington they think D.C. then ask me if I know their cousin

Hmmph

Yes, Ive gotten my black card revoked many a time when I go back east or meet people who are not locals (who have relocated). One woman I met told me that I " wasn't black on the inside". As far as I know we are all red on the inside

But when I meet other black people who have grown up here,we pretty much have the same experience. Esp if you live in a mostly white or diverse neighborhood.

Always tired of "proving" how black I am or I am holier than black!
