Sorry but I must correct people. I checked the NWMLS and there are dozens and dozens of condos in SEATTLE in that price range all over the entire city. Grant you some have small square footage but others have room. When it comes to condos Seattle has a wide range of prices. Its not just expensive like some think.

I looked specifically at homes from the $250-$275k range in the West Seattle area, and there was a total of 28 listed. Upon further examination, some were not really even what West Seattle residents would consider WS "proper" (e.g., South Park, White Center). None of them looked, IMO, to be in highly desirable areas, or to be particularly nice.

Echoing what other posters have already said, finding even a condo in that price range in a desirable area of Seattle will be difficult. West Seattle is a hip area that offers many amenities, but the trade-off is high real estate prices.

Yeah, that's why I brought up east side 'burbs to this poster. There are condos listed in the 250k range there (mostly Kirkland, but some Bellevue and Redmond) and it's a more newly developed, as the poster put it, "yuppie" area. Although people who need to be directly in the city might have an aversion to the commute. Depends also where someone works.

My quick glance at the MLS did show condos in that price range, yes. However, I didn't see any "houses" for under $279k even in South Park or White Center for under $250k.

I just took it to mean that the OP meant a single-family free-standing house when voicing his request. The OP also described the desire to be in a "yuppie" area and I wouldn't consider South Park yuppie.

The traffic around Seattle is bad and getting worse. You will probably want to live near your work if possible.

Chicago is probably more affordable than Seattle, especially when you consider the easier commute lets you live farther out.

There are plenty of areas for young people on the Eastside or in Seattle , but there are big differences between these places. Around here the term yuppie does not mean young and single.
