Default Has anyone moved to Seattle from Florida?

Hi all,
I'm sure similar thread was posted previously, but I'm considering moving to Seattle from Orlando Florida, so I would like to know more about Seattle before I make a decision.
1. Do you regret leaving the sunshine state? How do you like the rainy days in Seattle?
2. How are the people in Seattle? Friendly? Hard to make friends? I honestly don't like the people in FL. I think a lot of people here are rude, uneducated and annoying.
3. Can you walk or ride a bike to go somewhere in Seattle? In FL, you must have a car just to get a coffee...
4. How is the economy in Seattle? I'm a female young professional (late 20's).
5. Are there many activities/events in Seattle especially for single people?

I know this is depending on what you want in the city, but I don't really like FL. I've visited many places like Miami, Tampa, Daytona, Cocoa beach...I don't like any of the cities. A lot of places are just dirty and ghetto. And I can't stand the humidity anymore. I tried to like Orlando but after living here for four years, I've come to realize that I don't belong here.

I would love to hear honest opinions from people who moved from FL.
Thanks!

My first cousin's daughter moved to Seattle from Tallahassee six years ago, and is very happy here. After it dawned on her parents that she wasn't going to move back to Florida, they upped and moved to Edmonds, half an hour north of their daughter. They've been here a little over a year now, and they don't regret it. My cousin can go on endlessly how miserably hot and humid Florida is in the summer. She claims to not mind the rain here, and says it rains a lot harder in Florida. Her feeling is that Florida is full of ignorant rednecks and crazies, and thinks that Seattle is a lot more cultured and educated, and they love that they can walk to things in downtown Edmonds, and love the views.
I know that after living in Florida for 40+ years, she was very ready to leave it, so I'm not sure that anywhere wouldn't have been an improvement, but for right now she sounds like an ad for the Seattle area chamber of commerce.

I can second all that Ira said. Our daughter moved to Seattle from Orlando when she was in her early 20s (that was over 10 years ago) and she's loved living here. My husband and I moved to Poulsbo (near Seattle) five years ago after spending 15 years in Orlando. We haven't regretted it for a second. That said, we're originally from the midwest, and the winter weather seems very mild here in comparison--but if you're originally from Florida or a warmer climate area, it might not be such an easy transition. You won't know until you try it. Good luck!

Lynn

I moved here last May from Savannah, GA which is right up the road from Jacksonville and just as bad when it comes to heat and humidity. Do I regret leaving? Not at all. I had no job there, I have a job here.

The rainy days are exaggerated a bit... sure, it's GRAY a lot in the winter, but the spit that they call rain here is nothing like a southern thunderstorm. Last summer I never turned on the A/C in my house or my car the entire summer. The 60's and 70's from May-August were great... I don't think we saw 80 till Labor Day weekend and even then a non-humid 80 is MUCH different than 80 down south. My utility bills were 50% less than they were in Georgia when I was paying hundreds of dollars per month in cooling costs to Georgia Power who conveniently raised their rates during the summer months.

Seattle is great... I am very happy here and I can go outside in the summer without having to worry about humidity and heat index warnings.
Those that complain about Seattle having "horrible" or "cold" summers should go spend one in the south and then re-evaluate their opinion.

I've lived in Florida, and right now we are living on Johns Island SC. We return to the greater Seattle area in 28 days and counting....Yippy!!! We will both take what Seattle and Wa has to offer over both states hands down. If you love the out doors and all that goes with it: hiking, kayaking, skiing (water and snow), camping and all the things a larger city has to offer you will like Seattle.

If on the other hand you love the beach and going naked most days due to the heat, well then stay where you are.

BTW other posters....bashing people in other areas of the USA is not very nice. Ignorance and crazy are all over, not limited to certain states.

If you were referring to my post, I'm not familiar enough with Florida to know one way or the other. I was just repeating what my cousin said, who'd lived in Florida for 40 years. Yes, ignorant crazies are all over. But my cousin seems to feel that Florida is the Capitol of Crazyville. I wouldn't know.
I visited Mississippi, a place where people are supposed to be ignorant, racist, and backward. I found people I met there to be delightful, smart, and fun.

Yep, I am planning to move there too from Fl west coast area. Sure are way to many horrendos crimes here now and the heat is getting to me after 12 years. Some family out there and can be closer to them. It would be nice to have educated conversations again and eat some pacific fish and blackberry pie.

This is pretty much it... I will take the hiking, kayaking, skiing, camping and everything else Washington has to offer over going to overpopulated beaches that in some cases aren't even clean while sweating my tail off as I walk into a wall of humidity.

There are 2 seasons down there... summer and almost summer. It's late March and temps are already in the 80's... Yuck.

I don't miss the south.

We just moved from Ft Myers at the end of December and couldn't be happier. We were so over the heat, humidity, general living in FL and had to get out. I'm in my late twenties and my husband is in his early forties, and there's plenty of things for us to do.

The "rain" here is really a slight mist. I've never actually used an umbrella here (though I think with how windy it usually is when it actually rains it would still be pointless). But while it sometimes gets annoying with the cloud cover, the days when it's cloudless absolutely make up for it. And this past week has been quite amazing.

I drive all the time, mostly because I live in Seattle and work in Bellevue. But we're right in an area of Queen Anne where we can walk across the street to two grocery stores, and about 6 bars/restaurants. My husband rides his bike EVERYWHERE, with no issues. People here are quite nice, but they don't actually want to hang out with you. I've made friends with the girls I work with, but I haven't met anyone in a bar that I've wanted to hang out with (though I don't really try to do that).

Honestly, I couldn't be happier with our decision to move here. I really haven't found anything here that I actually would dislike.

Agreed... I have no issues with the mist or with the cloud cover either. The summer makes up for it. The 60's and 70's last summer were just amazing, even though most Washingtonians I've talked to said last summer was cold. LOL!

I like what you said about the people, because it definitely applies to my co-workers. Nice people that I don't associate with outside of work.

I'm quite happy too... as said, I don't miss the south!
