It went up again today at some stations, making it a 20 cent hike in 5 days in my area. That is not normal noise, it's a pretty big jump in such a short time- especially when the rest of the country is trending down right now.

Gas prices.

The difference between 3.99 and 4.29 is not important. 20 gallons at 4.29 equals 85.80. Those same 20 gallons at 3.99 equal 79.80. Gas prices are really not that far apart at the end of the day.

Our nearest 4 stations have all remained at $4.15 for about a month now. We did pass one in Redmond at $4.25 but it's always higher than most. In Seattle, I'd not be surprised at an increase now that tourist season is in full swing, with cruise ships in.

They have jumped in Everett as well from what I saw last night, 4.19 to 4.27 was common.

And to the other poster, sure 20 cents on its own doesn't make a huge difference, but my point is that prices everywhere else are FALLING, while ours continue to climb.

If you pass that station and go down to hwy 99, its about 4.20.
Gas stations near an airport have a captive audience too. When you need to fill up a rental car before returning it, you'll stop at any station you can find close by. And for business travelers, the gas would be expensed so they're probably not price shopping.

Yikes - I hadn't really noticed the spike until today, when I paid $4.29 for regular unleaded at a Texaco in Renton.

Why is Arco always cheaper? Is the gasoline really of lower quality?

OK, what I said before was true, but today our 4 local stations all went from $4.15 to $4.25 overnight.
Maybe they know most people will go see Mom tomorrow and they want to take advantage like the florists do.

Because they don't accept credit cards, and debit cards are charged with a service fee. If you pay with cash you reap the savings.

ARCO Gasoline - FAQs

EDIT: According to their FAQ's they are test marketing credit cards just in the Seattle area. And the debit card fee has been waived in Seattle. Does not say whether there is a fee for credit.
