Default student apartments in Shoreline?

We are sending a kid from Idaho to Shoreline Community College. We hear apartment rentals are spendy. He does have a roommate already from here. We'd like to find things that don't have 1 year leases, in case something doesn't work out. Is it best to hook up w a real estate agent, or a property management company? I understand we may need to look in a close-by town.

I live in Shoreline now and pay $895 for a one bedroom. There are cheaper areas, but along with that comes poorer/rougher neighborhoods.

As Cowlitz said, kmt, there are "rough" areas in Shoreline. I recommend staying away from the Aurora Avenue corridor. You probably should be looking at places in the Richmond Beach or surrounding area to be close to Shoreline CC.
