I mentioned this in another thread, but I am wondering if anyone has statistics as to how many Seattlites were actually born and raised here? I'm not talking about the suburbs, I'm talking about Seattle proper. It seems like every American I meet here is from the Midwest, East Coast, or California. Granted, I myself am a transplant so I am perhaps predisposed to associating with other newcomers. But even in outlets that are not specifically targeted towards transplants, it still seems to be overwhelmingly non-natives of Seattle. It's understandable as to WHY so many people from around the country want to live here, but I was honestly a little surprised to meet so many and so little Seattle natives (or even PNW natives in general, for that matter). Do born & raised Seattlites tend to leave the city after high school/college or something?

Last time I saw data on it, Seattle itself was at about 30% native, the rest of the Puget Sound Region 45%. It's not that they move away, it's the number of new homes/condos and new jobs bringing in people from all over. Amazon
alone hired 19,000 last year and are still at it, most coming from other states. Also, Seattle has more dogs than children, and the way their schools have been, those that do have kids are likely to move to the eastside
when they turn about 4-5 years old.

According to the 2000 census:

Seattle residents:
39% born in WA state
43% born in US, but not in WA
18% born outside the US

Maybe 20% born in Seattle? I'd say that 39% is less now as more people move here from far and wide. Like Hemlock wrote, forced busing caused a lot of Seattle natives to move to the suburbs, but look at Bellevue:

Bellevue residents (2000 census):
34% born in WA state
40% born in US, but not in WA
26% born outside the US
.
