I am moving to Seattle to be with my grand kids. I am a teacher by trade, working and living in the Dallas area. Can anyone tell me where I can find affordable housing? Prefer the eastern side of things, almost all the way to the pass. Cannot afford 500K...can't even afford 200K Help! Teachers don't make much! Is there anything out in Boonies?

I don't think you'll find anything below $200k in the eastern suburbs of Seattle ...nor any of the locations along the I-90 corridor. I've seen small houses for sale in the $200k range in places like Gold Bar and Sultan. There may be some small condos in that price range. How about renting?

How about the western side of the world? What are the negatives? Since we are land locked here in Dallas.....don't quite understand how to get over to all those other areas.....ferry?

You are most likely going to have to buy a condo, probably a smaller one in that price range.
I have 3 siblings and several friends in Western Washington that are teachers...NONE of them live or teach within 100 miles of Seattle...and come to think of it...they all bought their homes at least 4 years ago ... There was a big article in the Times within the last year about the fact that most municipal type workers (Teachers, Police, Fire, etc) cannot afford to live in the cities they work in. Good luck... Regarding the Ferry - ready Wythor's excellent "My Seattle" thread where he directly discusses the Ferry commute issue. Then again...as a Teacher you can live and work wherever you want...so the other side of the water might indeed be a good option for you as long as you get a teaching job on that side. Then you only have worry about the ferry when you visit....and here's a tip on using the ferry...Motorcycle ![]() Last edited by Deep_Vee; 10-11-2007 at 11:59 AM. |

You really can't buy anything in Seattle (or the Eastside) for under $300K that's decent. West of Seattle (Bainbridge Island, Kitsap Peninsula) are as or getting as expensive. A small condo is probably in your future if you wish to relocate to the Seattle metro area.

Thanks for all the good information. I have some more research to do it looks like. Finally found how to apply for certification. Despite the high cost of living....pay range for me is $ 4,000 less per year than what I make in Dallas! Should have been a rock star! Again, thank you for all your help. I need to look at Mt. Vernon.
