Have been getting calls from this collection agency, called Takhar Group, for past 2 months, maybe more. I know for sure I have no debt, and have never been sent to collections. I have looked online and based on some research this agency collects debts that have been charged off or paid. They sometimes even call people who are not using that number anymore. They demand payment and SSN and threaten to report it to Credit Agencies and mess up your score. There are lots of stuff about it online but in general it is not fun to deal with them. I never spoke to actual agent but some online reports say they are mainly guys with thick Indian accents that give you some plain American name, like Charlie Brown or some other famous name. Their voicemails contains some pretty offensive words like "you must call", "we cannot believe you did not call", "If you do not call we will report you". I can trace complains about this agency as far as 2008 and as of 2012 they are still at large. The most disturbing thing is they refuse to provide verification of the debt. How can this kind of company be reporting people to credit agencies, does credit agency really take anybody debt report, even non existing one, or made up one. Some 13 year olds who never had credit card where accused of debts.
Anybody knows anything about this? Do you get calls? How did you stopped them?

You should report this to the Consumer Protection Bureau and the state Attorney General. Both track things like this. Next time they call, you can then tell them that you've reported THEM and they would be wise to stop calling you.

That's about right. The OP should know if he owes anybody or not and should know who it is that he owes it to. The next best thing that we use at our home is use a phone that identfies the caller. If the caller is from the so-called collection agency, just don't answer the phone. This avoids a lot of unwanted calls. Sounds to me like it's somekind of a scam and there is a lot of that going around.

Yes, it is a scam but sadly, these people fall in some kind of semi-legit companies that to some degree fish out debts from people for some kind of book club. No idea about that but I do no that I don't owe, and if I did owe, I would not pay before verification. The most disturbing is that they can report made up debt to credit agency. How I do not know. But if credit agencies are business like any other they might take anybodies report just to drive up values and inquire more request for report that in the end brings in more money. It kinda sucks they both end up "bad guys" but you must work with credit agency if you want to live in USA. I will research further and call those. I am pretty good about avoiding calls from solicitors but these people are hard core pros that just do not give up so easily. They were reported to BBB before and that is why they do not have BBB accreditation but businesses are not required to get that.

Medena,

It might not be a scam so much as that they just have the wrong number. I've received several calls/messages from collection agencies for other people. I just call them back and tell them the person they're seeking isn't at this phone #. They'll usually ask something like, "Does anyone else use this phone #?", and I let them know I'm the only one at the number, and I've had it for five years.

So, before you summon the authorities, just give them a call back. It might be a scam, so of course don't give them any significant info. If it's obviously a scam, tell them not to call again, or you'll report them.

Collection agencies will gather personal info every way they can ... so this is likely a scam and not a case of a wrong number.

Record the number and report it to the FCC. Or call the police.

And just remember to never give out any personal information to them at all.
