Yet another move to Seattle
We are moving to Seattle in 2 months from San Diego and looking for a good neighborhood. We are unable to look at areas and have to everything via Internet. I found a seemingly awesome place I think in the Yesler Terrace area but don't know how safe it is. It is on Eleventh Ave. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Cap hill is a primarily gay/hipster hood, so violent crime is miniscule. There is some drug use and property crime, so you will probably not want to park your car on the street if you will be bringing a car.

Do you know what the cross street is? I lived near 12th and Pine up until a month ago, and the area was generally safe, very busy, but somewhat rundown - theres a lot of upscale lofts / condos / apartments under construction in the area, which should help. 11th is generally a larger residential street, but it gets sketchier the further south you go (around Seattle University area). Northern parts tend to be hit and miss, depending on where it crosses.
In response to above, I never had any problems in the two years I lived there with my car on the street. I was, however, very close to a police station so you may want to take my experience with a grain of salt. The area is known for having more crime but I never saw much of it. Parking is cutthroat though, so pray that the place comes with a parking spot. Drug use and transients are a problem on and around broadway and many of the side streets. The crowed tends to be younger - mid 20's through early 30's mostly. Nightlife is great, if you don't mind trendy dive bars.
EDIT: I just noticed you mentioned Yesler Terrace. Though I've never actually spent much time there, I wouldn't personally want to live there based on what I know about the area, and wouldn't consider it a safe area based on the surrounding streets.

DO NOT MOVE TO YESLER TERRRACE!! That is where alot of the homeless hangout, it's by the courthouse and JAIL!
YIKES
So I'm guessing you'd like to be Downtown then? Look more towards Capital Hill or if you can afford it Belltown - and YOu'd probably love Queen Anne too
I'm also guessing you don't have kids.
So what is your budget - that will help out better

Actually 11th Ave is up the hill from Yesler Terrace, and not quite so bad an area to live in. Kind of mixed from what I recall, you don't want to let your kids run wild through the streets at night there, but generally it's not too bad. It's near Seattle University, Harborview and Swedish Hospitals. I'm looking at it on Mapquest right now ..... you could walk on 12th Ave to Capitol Hill, and going the opposite way go down into Chinatown .... errrr, the International District. It's conveniently located.

Any city comes with it's shadier neighborhoods, so it might not be bad idea to check with the Seattle police dept. re: crime rates and neighborhoods. Many families I work with prefer to live in neighborhoods such as Montlake, Greenlake, and Madison Valley. The Eastside is pretty yuppie, but very safe feeling neighborhoods all over Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, etc. It just depends what you're looking for and whether or not you're going for the suburbian feel or not. I hope this was helpful and best of luck with your move!
