I'm moving to Seattle May 1st after living in Chicago since 2005. There, I worked on the Chicago Water Taxi for 6 years. With the brunt of my work experience being on boats, I'm really looking around for marine work in Seattle. As expected, a lot of companies are hiring in march/april. Does anyone know if I have a good chance of getting hired in May, or does anyone have ideas for companies I could contact?

Thanks a lot for any help! It is much appreciated.

Not a good time for jobs on the water here. The ferries are cutting back, and those jobs are hard to get anyway. The fishing boats are all worried that they will not be able to go out, because they require a federal inspector on board to enforce regulations, and with the government spending cuts they don't expect enough inspectors to go around. The best chance is construction, the seawall replacement coming up may result in hires to work on the water side off barges.

Yes, those kind of jobs were always hard to get and they're always pretty thankless (though well-paid) jobs to have. Most of the people I know having those kinds of job have some kind of connections. The Deadliest Catch tv show has made it even more competitive.

Are you looking to do seafood processing work or working for a smaller independent boat? There's definitely a difference between the two.

Either way, get thee to Ballard ... most of that work ships out from Ballard.

Also, the folks I have talked to that work for Deadliest Catch-esque operations know someone who convinces the captain to give them a chance.
