Default Disabled female looking to relocate to Seattle or suburbs

Hi,

I am currently living in Colorado Springs, but my daughter (and I think soon, my son) live in Seattle. I really have nothing holding me to Colorado Springs anymore.

I have been disabled for 9 years and live on disability and insurance from where I used to work. My income is very low (about $1,500 a month). I presently live in a pretty nice one-bedroom apartment and am paying a very low rent because of the Housing Authority. I really, really want to move out to Seattle or close by to be closer to my kids, but am not at all sure I can afford it. I guess my main question is, is there much help in the Seattle area for disabled persons, would I be able to find some help to make moving there a little easier? I guess I'll leave it at that for now, but anyone who wants to offer any additional advice, knowledge about any of my issues is more than welcome.

Thanks,
Paula

Subsidized housing has long waiting lists in Seattle. You'd best get your daughter to help you with that. Once you get your foot in the door there are a hodgepodge of public and private agencies such as Catholic Charities and Plymouth Housing that can help Seattle residents, although I don't know the exact situation at this time since it's been a while since I lived there.

There are also food banks and free meal centers, and you can call the Seattle Metro people to get door-to-door van rides as needed for shopping or appointments or whatever.

Thank you Woof. I was already thinking about getting my name on the low-income housing lists. I know it took about 3 years for me to get a Section 8 voucher here in Colorado Springs, so I figured it would be about the same amount of time there. I want to get my finances a little steadier and be a little more healthy before I move, so I figure maybe by that time, something in public housing may arise.

Well, if you already have Section 8 there's no problem. Simply have it transferred to the agency in Seattle, it can be used anywhere in the US.
