Hi everyone,

I am about to complete my training in surgery and I have decided to come to Seattle, for pretty much the rest of my life. Looking forward to it

I'm 32M, single. However, I would like to buy a house for my future family.

I don't know my annual income yet, but the national average for a practicing general surgeon is about $250,000 to $350,000. So I'm looking for a very nice neighborhood, but not the most expensive places like where the corporation CEOs or professional athletes live.

I'm a party animal so I don't want to be too far away from downtown, by that I mean no more than 30 miles away from downtown.

So in a nutshell: 32M / single (will have family soon) / surgeon / annual income $300,000 / want house / nice neighborhood / within 30 miles of downtown

Thanks!

The better areas of Seattle that would suit you (Magnolia, Madison Park, Upper Queen Anne) and the nicest suburbs on the east side (15-20 miles from Seattle) are all very affordable for that income. Assuming you don't have to pay huge malpractice premiums out of pocket or have big student loan debt, the prices of $600,000 to about 1.5 million would be well under 30% of your monthly income. I would suggest the Yarrow Bay area of Kirkland or Medina, easy drive to Seattle and also as a party animal downtown Kirkland and Bellevue are pretty lively. Those homes are about 1.5 million and up.

Unless you are moving up from California, get ready to be disappointed.

how about the big condo high rises in downtown bellevue? i know a guy who has a $2.5m or so condo above the Westin and he loves it...he's also a bit of a party animal. you can get a nice unit in that building without a view for probably around $1m.

Yeah, I wouldn't buy a house for a family I don't have yet... but that's just me. If I were you, I'd get something in Capitol Hill and then move out to a more family friendly area (not that CH is not, it's just not for everyone) when the time comes.

Do you know where you'll be working yet?

Yeah, don't buy a house now because there's a pretty big chance that your future wife won't like it and make you move anyways.

Get a nice apartment near the hospital you'll be working with. Then when you are on call you won't have to drive 20 miles at 3 am.
