I would be curious to hear from folks who have either lived both places (SV and Seattle) or who chose one city over the other - and why? The likes and the dislikes, what were the major factors that made you choose one city over the other?

Thanks!

Seattle is not as strong a start up community as the Bay Area but it's doing well. Many Bay Area companies have a strong presence here. Here is a more recent VC map: This map shows where venture capital dollars are flowing in the U.S. - GeekWire

And more detail here: America's Leading Metros for Venture Capital - Richard Florida - The Atlantic Cities and http://www.theatlanticcities.com/posts/startupcity/ which says Seattle is #7 in US for venture capital.

@Seacove...what about people more into b2b startups and/or enterprise vs. consumer web? I've heard that there's more of a emphasis on the former in Seattle (which I like).

Also, what is the culture of collaboration and mentoring in Seattle like? Thanks!

I think there is more focus on b2b in Seattle because of Microsoft and Amazon (AWS could be considered more b2b focused and startups use Amazon to market and sell their business/services such as Amazon local). There are numerous groups you can join and others will have endless suggestions but geekwire.com and techflash.com are local. You could email them and they would likely respond.

Startup Ventures Meetups near Seattle, Washington - Startup Ventures Meetups - Seattle

The culture is going to be a little provincial because many of the local startups are offshoots of larger companies where they worked together previously. It doesn't mean you can't get mentoring, but you will find that a lot of these people know each from past lives but that's true for the Bay Area too.
