So there's a 90% chance that I'll have an offer from Amazon over the next week, so as I usually do, I wanted to get ahead of myself and start planning our move from the East-Coast. My wife is considering applying to UW for a PhD starting next year and since she's just learning how to drive, I wanted to pick a neighborhood within walking distance to or with easy public transit to UW.

From what I've read so far, there aren't really any bad neighborhoods, but does anyone have a recommendations for the most optimal neighborhoods in this scenario?

Thanks!

Eastlake and parts of Capitol Hill will be pretty close to both UW and SLU.

Thanks. Those are the area I've been eyeing. Are there any particularly good spots in those areas that are more walkable, near groceries etc as well as near the pertinent bus stops?

Also how is biking between East Lake and SLU? I know from SLU to CapHill the inclines are pretty intense. Is East Lake similar?

So much depends on whether you want a house or an apartment and what you would like to walk to...Whole Foods or Safeway...one or two coffee shops or a whole neighborhood at your doorstep with everything within blocks from you. If you really want to be close to UW then I would also look at Wallingford and Ravenna...both would have lots of housing within walking distance of a number of grocery stores, close proximity to the U and on nice days walkable to campus. Wallingford would be the more vibrant of the two and is the neighborhood just to the west of I5. There is a QFC grocery store as well as tons of restaurants, coffee shops..etc..great bus route right on 45th Street with an easy straight shot to campus too.

For Capitol Hill - I would look north of Olive, staying within 5 blocks to either side of Broadway or 15th, and south of Aloha (the area to the north gets more and more residential, and less walkable). That part is fairly residential, but is vibrant, with grocery stores, coffee shops, lots of good restaurants, etc - yet quieter than the area around Pike/Pine where much of the nightlife is.

Ravenna could be a good fit. It mostly has single family homes. If you live closer to the south end of Ravenna, I definitely think it's walkable. I lived on 29th NE between 55th and 60th for a few months when I didn't have a car and had no issues. It's close to UW with frequent bus service. The drive to Amazon shouldn't be too bad from there.

Also the Roosevelt district, just east of Ravenna, between Ravenna and Greenlake.

Ravenna, to the north of the U District, and Montlake, bordering the south end of campus. Wallingford, also, is an easy bus ride to the UW. And on the eastside of campus, down the hill, is University Village. The SE end of Ravenna Park borders on that. Lots of apt. buildings there, close shopping.

I think it would be a pretty easy bike ride.
