I'm confused!!!!!!! I have met so many great people on my trip here to Seattle. So far I have not run into anyone that I would consider to be the Seattle freeze type. I'm thinking the "Seattle Freeze" is another misconception. Just to keep everyone from moving here. Everyone has been great. On a side note I am a very upbeat fun person so maybe I'm not the norm around here. But all I can say is that I am having a great time and the people are great.

I LOOOOOOVE SEATTLE!!!

I'm sure others will come on and tell you how wrong you are, but I've lived here 27 years and agree with you. You get out of a relationship what you put into it. Enjoy your visit!

I couldn't agree with you more. I put a lot of time into people. I find that if you give positive energy... you get it back. If you ignore them then you get ignored back. Plain and simple.... Step out of the norm, think outside the box and stop coloring within the lines. Live a little!

Most of the people who talk about the freeze are from somewhere east of the continental divide. You're from California, remember, those same types often say we're reserved and stand-offish too. If you can handle the weather which is usually the only thing people from Socal have an issue with, you'll be fine.

I've lived here for four years, moved here from the Midwest, and I agree! I do not see this freeze everyone online talks about.

I visited my best friends in Seattle for 4 days a few weeks ago and met a lot of cool people. Everyone was nice and I didn't notice any sort of weird stand-offish people. In fact I came away thinking people were extremely friendly. Whatever I guess.....

Although we're not as vocal there are many of us who haven't had trouble making friends.

Back home I heard the same thing about Melbourne and Sydney, so it's definitely not just a Seattle or even West Coast thing. I think any large city with a sizable number of adult transplants will have these kinds of complaints.

It's harder to make friends as an adult - I think sometimes that gets conflated with the Seattle Freeze. People are busy with work, families, hobbies, and their existing network of friends that they probably don't get to see as much as they'd like. It's perfectly understandable that they want to nurture their existing friendships instead of making new ones.

My personal experience was that people went out of their way to make me and my husband feel welcome. I didn't expect people to be so friendly and I feel they went above and beyond. I do think it helps that our "type" fits in well in Seattle - young(ish ), athletic, affluent, liberal, and geeky but not socially awkward. Everyone has opportunities to make friends, but some are going to do better than others. That's true everywhere.

I would expect to have a much harder time if we'd moved to an area where socialising consisted of watching football and church events, or where everyone played golf and hung out at the country club. But I like to think that I'd do the best I could while quietly making plans to move if it became unbearable. It's nobody's fault, and just because I don't fit in doesn't mean it's a horrible place or that the locals are horrible people for not changing to suit me. But if I constantly complain and insult them behind their backs, then I wouldn't be surprised if the people listening to me figure that I'm the problem.
