I forgot about East Hastings street. Yeah that place is a haven for cocaine and heroin addicts. I've driven through there after dark a few times and it is a bit unnerving. It's definitely not a place I'd walk through after dark. It's amazing how once you near downtown, the entire place changes within a couple blocks and looks posh again.

But that's as far as "grit" goes in Vancouver. As a whole, that place is very clean and everything looks pretty new.

Oh yeah, it's still there. East Hastings Street. Block after block of druggies and prostitutes. It's a city full of grit all jammed into one street.

How gritty is Seattle? About 1/10th of 1%

I was about ready to comment on East Hastings street. I remember taking a former girlfriend to Van and we decided it would be a good idea to walk to Chinatown in which we walked thru East Hastings area. She kept on saying, "where are you taking me too?" Haha... Yes that qualifies as gritty.

Right? To me, most of the areas south of I90 from the Duwamish to I5 down through Georgetown is "gritty"(which I actually like). Other than that, Seattle is full of really nice areas, nice areas and some more run down areas. Kind of like any other American city of it's size.

Yep. When I was little, we visited Vancouver and ended up driving through that area. I remember being absolutely petrified.

20 years later was the next time I visited Vancouver. After having lived in a couple big cities including San Francisco (where I currently was at the time), I kind of thought I had been "toughened up" and couldn't be phased by things like that anymore. Well, I get to Vancouver, start walking around near downtown, and ended up turning onto that street. And I was just as petrified as I had been the first time.
