In theory, I should love Seattle. It's by the sea, it's green, it isn't very hot in the summer, it's very left wing, and it has a decent skyline. Yet for some reason the city just doesn't impress me at all. The downtown is kind of empty and run down looking when you're actually in it, even though it appears grand from a distance. The rain and clouds seem depressing there, yet they don't bother me in Vancouver or Portland. I find there's just something grim about the place that I really don't like.

What is it about Seattle that is failing to make me love it?

You need to be more receptive to the beauty found throughout the city--that, and we have the best summer in the nation.

And run down? Compared to what, Manhattan? Have you ever lived in other city downtowns? Seattle is very clean in comparison.

It's not about Seattle, it's about you and Seattle together: you just aren't made foreach other, simple as that.
This doesn't make you "bad", it doesn't make Seattle "bad". You two just aren't a good fit!
I've felt that way about houses I've owned, people I've known, foods I've eaten - they had every reason for me to love them, but I didn't.
I hope you find a place that's "you" and that you'll love!

Call me crazy but I felt similar in Tokyo. To me, growing up in a big, dirty city I guess I just wasn't impressed by the big, dirty city of Tokyo. Sure there's lots of stuff to do, but the city itself wasn't all that impressive.

It isn't the city, it's you, and your preferences. None of us have ESP. How should we know why you aren't impressed?

OP, I get what you are saying. I felt that way when I first visited the area, and sometimes 10 years later I still feel that way. Lots of reasons on my part, but only you can determine exactly why it doesn't click for you. Our kids are so entrenched here, as our jobs, that we feel moving would cause a lot of turmoil for our family. If you don't yet have roots here, you may want to seriously consider moving -- no reason to pay so much for real estate if this doesn't feel like home.

Lately I feel a little of that when I walk around the 3rd & Pine area and see all the homeless and especially the mentally ill yelling at people, or at no one in particular. All it takes is a ferry ride back from Bainbridge Island at night, with the lights of the city in the distance to make me forget about any negative feelings. I like to visit both Portland and Vancouver but I'm glad I work in Seattle. No city is for everyone, if Seattle is not your thing, don't live or work there.

The only 2 things I don't like about downtown are the waterfront (nothing like Vancouver or Portland) and the roads (really old and bumpy). Everything else is good.

I think that's what it is. The city is just too highway dominated. The Space Needle is also pretty disappointing. It's small and separated from the rest of the downtown. It's nothing like you see on Frasier.

Does this feeling become more pronounced this time of year? It sounds a bit like SAD to me.
