Exclamation Affordable living?

I am relocating from NC. The area I am focused on is Capital Hill. Are there any apartments within the $850 range?

Yes...sort of. I moved out of central Capitol Hill a few months back, but was paying $735 at the time - I'm sure they raised it to $775-$800 for the new tenant though, they even tried to raise it a few times during my lease. With that said, it was a studio and it had minimal amenities, but it did have laundry on site and an amazing view of downtown.

Rental prices are on the rise in the area due to high demand and a large amount of apartments being torn down / renovated into condos. If you can find a room in a house and don't mind living with strangers, you can find something easily under $850 and for a relatively nice place. If you're stuck on an apartment though, the cheaper ones tend to move fast and don't expect luxury.

Craigslist is an excellent resource, link should give you an idea of what to expect.

Oooooooh!

Of all of the places to be looking for inexpensive housing, Capital Hill AIN'T it. That is the "hip" neighborhood, the gay neighborhood, the neighborhood that everyone (inside and outside of the city) wants to live in at one point or another.

Bottom line: the rents there are rising faster than anywhere else in the city, and what your rent gets you is becoming less and less. Coming from NC, you may be shocked at what little $850 will get you. Hell, that MIGHT get you into a studio if you are lucky.

It is simple supply and demand, and Capital Hill is solidly on the "demand" end of that equation.

If price is the main factor, look in First Hill or Beacon Hill, which aren't too far from Capital Hill but are still affordable.

I live in a 2 bdrm on Queen Anne for $930 a month. The secret to renting is to stay away from 'managed' buildings. Find an apartment in a house and rent directly from the owner. Much better deal. These can be found on Craigslist, but you'll have to do some sleuthing to find something good.

It can be a total dump and if it has a view you'll pay through the nose. Forget a view if you want cheap.

Be aware that this area is filled with cigarette smokers; it's a huge issue if you have asthma or some other pulmonary issues. You need to consider the cost of doctor's visits and meds, right?
