If there's a walk signal, you're legally obliged to obey it. Green lights are for cars, not necessarily you. That the two coincide is not always guaranteed. Since the light was green, and your walk signal was not, the car had the right-of-way. Sure, the driver probably won't hit you, but no - you weren't legally in the right.

However, since you seem extraordinarily pleased with yourself over the whole thing... umm... yay? You won??

It's pretty hard to obey a walk signal that never says walk. I always win, since most of our city's walk lights don't work except in the crosswalk near our schools.

I have never run across a walk light that doesn't work in Seattle. There are some that won't work unless you push the button.

If you do find one, report it to SDOT at https://seattle-p1csrprodcwi.motorol...3c592408&srID=

In my opinion, Washington is a FAR better managed state than Illinois and with that I can say there's a LOT in Ill. that doesn't work and traffic control devices are just the tip of the ice berg.

Chicago doesn't actually have that many. In general, the larger and more crowded the city, the fewer walk buttons you'll find. Since it's assumed that there are always pedestrians waiting to cross, the walk signs in most areas of Chicago will change automatically. (Note that Chicagoans are also much more willing to jaywalk than people on the West Coast are.) That's less true in the suburbs where it's assumed that everyone drives to surface lots at their destinations, and pedestrians are an afterthought.

Here in ABQ we have these push buttons, but even when we have the 'walk' signal, cars still turn right at the green light without yielding to pedestrians, so it's a matter of pedestrians yielding to cars, or becoming road cakes.

There's a elderly gentleman who walk his dog every morning, and occasionally a motorist will try to float the light when he's used the walk light and crosswalk over to the store. You should see the look of the motorists when he taps on the hood of their vehicle with his cane when they drive up to his legs. Priceless!
