Then why not say it's a normal suburb... or use a name of an actual wealthy suburban city?

Default The Emerald City was Created by a RACIST

I like your comments but hate The Emerald City nickname. L. Frank Baum, the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was a hater. He advocated extermination of American Indians with his inventing of Oz. I watched the movie in IMAX 3D during last year's limited release and the racism was obvious now as an adult viewer, e.g., notice how the Wizard speaks of "civilized mankind". And the filmmaker blocked people of color in Oz - the black actor's face was never shown and they only clue I had was seeing his black hand waving goodbye to Dorothy. The Asian actor's face was shown but he covered his eyes with a hat upon the witch's arrival. Hollywood!

In a way, The Emerald City is a perfect nickname for Seattle - the people of darkest color can be spotted but they have little influence in the scheme of things. And it doesn't help when Asians/others come to Seattle with anti-black sentiment from crap they saw in movies or wherever the hate originates. How can we rid racism when people arriving here bring it with them? An Asian Director at Fred Hutchinson couldn't even keep her feet on the ground while interviewing me - twitchy legs, scrunched face, WTF? Yeah, Emerald City fits Seattle fine.

They mention the name "Junkie Town". Is it accurate? Are drugs a big problem?
It's a crock. I've been here 35 years, and I've never heard Seattle referred to as " Junkie City." They said that Seattle's homicides are up 30% from 2012 to 2013, but it's still half of what it was in the 1990's, and half of what it is in Boston(per 100,000 population).Murders, rapes, and robberies are all one third to one half per 100,000 population less than Boston's. Sure, crime happens here, as it does in any big city. But homicides are among the lowest in the country for it's size. Just because you saw it on TV or read it on the internet doesn't make it true.

I like the Emerald City myself, but I think a city can have more than one or two ongoing nicknames; heck, the more the better. Shows that there is some lively interest. I've come up with my own name: Big Green. From (obviously) Big Apple, Big Orange, Big D, Big Easy and (obviously) our greenery. Will it catch on? No, but I like to use it myself. BTW, I'm colorblind. I hope this font is in green, which was my intention. (On some forums the color is noted when you click on it, but not this one).
