The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco has a suicide phone that allows potential jumpers to talk to a counselor, who presumably tries to talk them out of jumping.

A couple weeks ago I saw this list of depression rankings by state...Oregon and Washington, which are commonly perceived to have high depression and suicide rates, were ranked 35 and 37, flanking New Mexico, which certainly doesn't have a lot of gloomy winter rain!

I've heard alot about the "suicide rate" in Seattle, but I don't know anyone from that area who has committed suicide. I know someone from GA who has committed suicide.

The CDC says: 10 of the 13 western states are in the highest 25% of the suicides in the nation and Nevada, specifically Las Vegas, has the highest rate in the nation. Here's the CDC's link:

Observing folks here over more than two decades, I'd say depression and suicide are individual and not climatic. Isn't it interesting how so many people on the Washington forum say they love it here?
Just to set the record straight Nevada numbers are not entirely accurate. The stat you are referring to compares suicides on a per capita basis--Las Vegas has an official population of about 1.1 million (excluding suburbs) but has close to a million people come and visit weekly--should a few of those people commit suicide (and who knows why they came here to begin with--broke, depressed) ever see Leaving Las Vegas? You just dont know circumstances and people think a trip to Vegas will cure whatever ailes them. It rarely does.

You are correct though--Seattle isnt even in the top 10 for suicide but it is in the top 5 for cloudy cities which does contribute to depression.
