For the past week, there have been several nights (including just now) where we've heard a big "boom" in the distance, almost like a really big firework or a small explosion. Any idea what this is? Several months ago, there was a similar sound, and it coincided with an explosion that went along with a house fire in Bellevue. I haven't heard of anything similar that matches with these more recent booms. Does anyone know what's going on?

I've been assuming these were fireworks.

I live in a neighborhood with more Mexicans, and each day that Mexico has played (and won) games in the World Cup, I have heard fireworks.

Also, fireworks have just started being sold in the area (there is a cart just outside of Woodinville, which isn't far from Redmond), and I think people are just shooting them off in a looooooong build-up to the 4th.

Thanks, that makes sense. Fireworks were my first thought, but there weren't a lot of booms- short firework display! I'll be glad when this is all over- my anxious dog is unhappy with the booms.

FWIW, I've heard them in Kirkland too.

Given that what they're doing probably isn't legal, they'd be foolish to keep doing it for a long time in the same spot. There is a long tradition in this area of people going to one of the reservations, buying otherwise illegal fireworks and bring them home.

Gotta love how these Jacka**** decide to wait until late at night to shoot their loud fireworks, having absolutely no concern for the vast majority of neighbors who are sleeping at that time. My area was quiet as usual all evening last night, but then we were woken up at nearly 1AM by very loud "booms" from fireworks.

I hear ya. Out in Woodinville I got woken up a little after 3am by a huge bomb/firework. My dog was freaking out til about 4am. Needless to say I desperately neeed extra caffeine this morning.

I'm glad you said that. .. I heard the usual around 10, then again around 11. Feel asleep and was woken up at 3, thinking I'd heard another, but smaller. Luckily the dog didn't seem to register that one. Woke me up though!
