Hello,

I will be making my first ever cross-country move probably around the first week of November. I will be driving a 16-foot Penske moving truck while towing my car on a carrier.

I am concerned about the weather conditions around this time. I am currently considering the Albuquerque to Salt Lake City route and continuing the rest of the way of I-84 and I-82.

Would this be the most advisable route for early November traveling?

Thank you guys!!

Probably the way I'd go, too. Hedges your bets. Odds of various passes being closed increases from about that point onward.

Guess I'm a bit puzzled, since Google Maps indicates the way you're planning is in-fact about the shortest way anyway.

Maximum risk-mitigation is to go all the way to Los Angeles and arc north on I-5. Big detour, though. Adds maybe 500 miles to the trip. If you said "January" vs. "first week of November," that would be the prudent way. You'll probably make it the other way w/o issue, that time of year.

There are places on I5 such as the Siskiyous at the CA/OR border (we had light snow there in April) and Grant's Pass that can get snow that time of year, but usually not too bad. Here in Western WA we normally don't get any snow before the week of Thanksgiving and even that is rare. The Albuquerque to Salt Lake City route is faster, but wait and see what the weather reports show a day or two before you go to decide.

I moved in late April 2012 from Houston (so weather wasn't really an issue). That is pretty much the best route for length and terrain. However, I went up I-45 to DFW then through Amarillo (Rt. 287) and cut through on Rt. 87 (I-25) up through Denver, CO (since I was visiting friends) and on to Cheyenne, WY. Then west towards Salt Lake City (I-80) and took I-84/I-82/I-90 on to Seattle. I think it's a bit shorter too.
