I just accepted a position in Kent, WA. I will be criss crossing the country for the next 6 weeks and will be permanent Oct 1. My wife will stay behind for a few months to finalize everything in Charlotte. My wife has visited Seattle and she loves it. She is tired of the heat and humidity. I am making the move sight unseen so I am very nervous to say the least. I have used this board for my education of the area and I have posted a few things while I was in negotiations just in case I was offered the position. Of course we will rent the first year. ( I would prefer a townhome or nice condo to avoid upkeep and maintenance.) I am hoping to stay in the 1k -1500 max range for a 2 bedroom for rent. Is this feasible?
Of course you guys know all the ins and outs of the area, so my question is: Should I just concentrate looking for a place in Kent or do you guys recommend any other suburbs? We do not have kids so schools are not a concern. We just want a nice, safe suburb with convenient shopping and amenities. We are pretty simple people: We enjoy hiking, being outdoors, running, etc.

Thanks for any help that you can provide!

Yes, concentrate on Kent to be near your job and find less expensive rent. Alternatives would be the nearby suburban cities of Federal Way, Renton or Auburn. Get any farther away and you will have a commute you will regret.

Just wanted to say congratulations and I'm so jealous! We moved to Charlotte 9 years ago from the SF Bay Area and we're trying to escape to Seattle but nothing has worked out for us so far job wise! We don't like it here, humidity, bugs, etc. I can't wait to get back to the west coast, specifically the Seattle area. Good luck to you!

A nice, safe suburb with convenient shopping and amenities, with nearby hiking, under 1500 dollars, and a reasonable commute to Kent. Very possible. I'm partial to Renton, but some of Kent would be fine too. Fortunately, the rents in South King County are relatively low compared to Seattle and the east side. There are parts of Renton, Kent, Auburn, Federal Way, etc to avoid, but there are also many parts of those places that are perfectly nice. The further east you go in Kent and Renton, the closer you are to good hiking.

If you are working in Kent, living in Covington wouldn't be a bad idea.

True story: when I moved from NC to the Seattle area, I lived in Kent first. It's an interesting area.

thanks for all of the good luck message and the warm welcome. Thanks Ira, I will definitely check out Renton. I hate that I am missing the famous summer time weather out there but what can you do? Ill toughen out the winter and anxiously await summer.

We did too! Which part of Charlotte did y'all move from? We should start a group, finding it a wee bit harder to make friends than we thought. Do not be surprised at the lack of please/thank you/excuse me, still getting used to it after a few months

Kent has a bunch of newer townhome and condo complexes that are fairly nice. Large numbers of them were foreclosed over the past few years so odds are you'll be able to rent one from an investor that picked it up for half what the previous owner paid. River View and The Lakes are 2 of the bigger west side planned communities. I've been in both and they're definitely liveable even if the schools are sub par. West Kent has a poor reputation, but it's not all bad.
