Seattle News and Events | Shellshocked! Bertha is Foiled Again, This Time, by

The tunnel was projected to be completed this very week, but is only about 1/10th done. Digging was supposed to resume in March 2015, but now there is a new obstacle: shells. Who could have predicted that there would have been shells around the perimeter of Elliot bay?

Do you think this tunnel will ever be completed?

I find it rather amusing that they are going to halt the project even more because SHELLS were found. Big deal, there are shells all over the sound and any other beaches- in the name of progress they need to scoop out the shells and MOVE FORWARD. Why is this such a problem?

It's an opportunity, not a problem, if you or your company is working on the tunnel. The more "problems" the better.

Can we just call a mulligan on this and fix the viaduct like we should have done all along?

There were some interesting ideas before they chose to go with the tunnel. If it were me, I would have either spent the money to a major retrofit of the existing structure, or do a minor retrofit and turn it into a park. But the powers that be( Former Mayor Nickels was a huge advocate for the tunnel) and others weren't so concerned about the cost.
I think it will still get built. Over budget and years late, and won't do anything to alleviate traffic. But the increased property values from those places currently in the shadow of the viaduct will soar, a few people will get rich, and the government will get increased tax revenues, if they ever figure out a way to pay for all the delays and cost overruns.

A little off subject I think it's so messed up that there's no downtown exits and it's only two lanes I think they should have the Tunnel and the viaduct to help traffix!

Since they only went 1,000 feet before Bertha the drill died, I would expect them to go another 1,000 or two and hit something else to kill it. This may go on for years, and eventually cost the taxpayers of Seattle a lot more.

I think that it will be done and open before the light rail line that we voted in for Northgate in 2008 will be open.

I dunno..I'm not a fan of the light rail, but they are stellar compared to the tunnel. They actually got something up and running.

As Ron Judd of the Seattle Times put it, the tunnel project gets lapped and heckled by a banana slug. I googled for slug speed, did the calculation, and it is literally true--the slug makes faster forward movement than the Seattle Tunnel Partners. And this was quite a while back. If you run the numbers now, the slug would overwhelming trounce the Tunnel Partners.

This was from about a year ago, prior to the meltdown and stoppage due to the pipe, or the discovery of shells.
