One other option I don't see mentioned yet is bike commuting. Even Capitol Hill is only seven miles from Greenwood and can be reached in 35-50 minutes. I do an equivalent length ride to downtown year round and it works out well. If you don't like hills there is always the option of an electric assist. Finally often taking your bike on the main bus and using it for the last mile or two can be faster than waiting for the transfer.

Thanks a lot for all of the advice everyone, I really appreciate it! I've dropped the whole cap hill endeavor, it just doesn't seem at all worth it. I've become friends with a few guys who live in Fremont and they have an available room, and I think I'm going to take it.

The commute from Cap Hill to Greenwood is difficult. I wouldn't recommend that.

I did the Greenwood/Fremont commute by bike for a while. Actually wasn't too bad. Greenwood is at a higher elevation, but the hill going up 8th isn't very steep.

And you can easily walk to N. 39th & Fremont N. to catch the #5. Generally, the simpler the commute, the better. Lot's of places to go in Fremont, plus you're close to Ballard, Wallingford, and the U District.
