So we have decided to settle here in Seattle after my husband retires from the military. We love it. However, the gray is starting to get to me a bit this year. So, in anticipation of that, I'm trying to plan for next winter to take a nice little vacay down Mexico way next February during the kid's winter break. I know nothing about Mexico and have no idea where to start to look at places to go. I'd like to get an idea of what to budget so I can start socking some money away for it. I'm originally from the East coast so am more familiar with the Caribbean and Florida. I would think it would be pricey to try and fly back there for a trip versus going south to Mexico?

Where do Seattle folks go for a cheaper warm weather recharge? I could go to Florida and stay with family, but I'd rather not. Been there, done that, it's not relaxing. I want an alcoholic drink in my hand, sand on my feet, and to do nothing for 4 days straight aside from eat, sleep, and drink my fruity drink and watch the kids swim.

Where do west coaster's go for that?

PNWers do go to hawaii, but also to Southern California and to Arizona. And to Mexico, most commonly Mazatlan, Los Cabos, and Puerto Vallarta. Mazatlan is the least expensive. I've been a few times, and it's certainly pleasant and pretty.

Palm Springs?

Santa Barbara?

San Luis Obispo?

San Diego?

These are just a few that come to mine. Often times, they are quite sunny, mild and warm (think 70's, maybe 80's) through many of the winter months. I was born and raised in Manhattan Beach (a stone's throw from LAX) and spent many a winter wishing I was in the PNW (I love the gloom). For some perspective, the weather forecast for Manhattan Beach on Wednesday is sunny and a high of 81 degrees. That's at the beach...I can only imagine it would be warmer inland including the desert southwest.

Good luck in your search for warmth! I'm freezing in SE Michigan right now wishing we were "home" in Seattle

Yes, Santa Barbara and San Diego are what I was thinking, but the OP said "on the cheap". It's very difficult to vacation in the US on the cheap, unless you go camping or stay in a Motel 6 for two weeks. And even that's not all that cheap, depending on location.

Coastal southern California (San Diego etc.) is not all that warm in February, although it's sunny enough as a rule. Inland (Palm Springs etc.) tends to be very nice at that time of year, but can get quite chilly in the evening.

If you can hitch-hike to Portland. you can get a $23.10 direct flight to San Diego (on select days) (Spirit / hobo air). Down at 6AM, return at midnight. No need for rental car / hotel, San Diego Airport is on the beach / waterfront. (I stay in guest homes... $10/ night Worldwide). Eat using grocery store surplus produce < $3/ day.

There are lots of bridges to sleep under near the airport (BTDT)

My brother has lived in Honolulu the last 15 years and says there's a ton of PNW folks there. Most go to Hawaii or California.
