Wife and I are currently renting in Ballard. We love the walkability and vibe of the neighborhood, and would love to buy in or near Ballard. However, the market is so competitive and prices are constantly rising. So we're starting to consider West Seattle as a (slightly) more affordable/realistic alternative. My only trepidation is that West Seattle seems isolated from the rest of the city and I'm afraid the West Seattle bridge traffic will keep us from visiting other areas we like in the city.

To West Seattle residents: do you find that you mostly stay in West Seattle or do you find it easy to into downtown and other areas in Seattle?

I've lived in West Seattle. The people I know I know mostly stay there, they feel like it is their very often protective cocoon. In fairness, there is just about anything you need there. I have a dear friend who I can sometimes lure out to Georgetown .

I lived in West Seattle from 1999 til last year. It's nice, and once you live there it has everything you need. Good restaurants, bars, grocery stores, Parks (Lincoln Park is awesome) etc... It's following in Ballard's footsteps. Once not very popular/expensive, and now much more so. The bridge is the drawback now. Rush hour can be awful, but evenings are better if you want to shoot into downtown for a change of scene.

I'm trying to think of a reason why I would want to leave West Seattle...nope...nothing. Has everything.

To go to Whole Foods. Or to the UW for entertainment, or to Elliott Bay Books for a good bookstore, and lectures/events. The people I know who live in W Seattle leave a few times/month for grocery shopping, though less than they used to, now that PCC Co-op is in the area.

Whole Foods is confirmed as the first tenant in the new Fauntleroy development (and they already have a Metropolitan Market). But West Seattle is awesome enough that you don't really need a Whole Foods to make it tolerable.

If I lived there I'd never leave, either.

Watch out tomorrow, Spokane St. and the low bridge are likely to be closed by protesters, making the high bridge gridlocked. One of my employees lives in the Admiral District, and rarely has trouble with the traffic (to downtown) since terminal 5 closed. He and his wife rarely come back into Seattle after work or on the weekend, if they need anything not in West Seattle they stop on the way home (such as Costco).

New resident to the whole area, and selected West Seattle sight unseen just because we found the "right" rental. I couldn't be happier! Love the Junction (work there) , and don't have a problem leaving West Seattle to venture out into other areas. I feel like downtown is close. We take the bus quite a bit so we don't have to find and pay for parking.

I think you really lucked out. Taking the bus downtown from the Junction is easy, and it's a fun neighborhood.
