That's exactly the kind of advice I've been looking for. Thanks so much, FoxyKnox. Federal Way is now on the list.

brainstorming possibilities: would living close to downtown be a viable option, with my wife commuting to bellevue (is the 90-405 route better than the 520-405?) and me commuting to tacoma. other posts have mentioned 35 minutes to belltown. is that sound about right? other areas (particularly south part of downtown that are recommended for living, ie beacon hill, capitol hill, madrona, or mount baker?
thanks again

New Castle is Renton...I think it's considered a decent area, but I'm not sure.

I grew up in FW and have lived in Renton for the past 4 years. They're about the same. Scuzzy, huh? Nice.

I live in Renton (well, just east in Fairwood) and worked in Federal Way for 6 years. I think that both cities have a greater mix of people in terms of race and income level than do cities such as Issaquah, Redmond and Bellevue.

That is a very true statement.

I agree with whoever said, try looking east, and sort of using Hwy 18 as a commute. It used to be a dangerous highway, but it's been improved (widened and better lit) and it might work. So you could look at eastern Auburn, Maple Valley, and other parts of eastern King County.
The commute up to Bellevue is still going to be a hassle, but at least it's really pretty this way. North on 18 to the Hobart-Issaquah Road, fighting through Issaquah, and then to I-90 with various options for sneaking up into Bellevue.

The city of Newcastle definitely has a high per-capita income (probably similar to Issaquah in terms of state rankings) and is quite nice.
