Wonder how many of these folks migrating to California, were originally from the Golden State. I've had several friends from CA move back home over the years.

I always seem to meet a lot of people with California connections in Washington State... even if it was 45 years ago or more.

Also know Washington born and raised that call California home...

Nothing wrong with either.

I know several people that moved to CA from here, but none were from there originally. In several cases they came back here within a few months when they found that the high cost of rent and state income tax more than wiped out the higher pay they had been offered. In other cases they went for higher paying tech jobs where the raise did cover the cost there. We go back to visit a few times a year but those trips only confirm that we are happier here.

Growing up in the SF Bay Area we had several neighbors with Washington ties as well as two of my school teachers...

The neighbors with Washington ties all came to California courtesy of the US military and stayed.

One of my teachers married a Californian she met while attending UC Berkeley... after her husband of 40 years passed... she did return to Purdy WA where she was from... she had some land and a cottage on the Sound... made several trips out her way and she was always glad to see former students...

My current neighbor is 87 and was raised near the Columbia gorge... she hated it and could not wait to leave the farm... and has been very happy her nearly 70 years here in California...

There's a good deal of out- and in-migration between the two states in the technology and aerospace industries. People flow to where good-paying jobs are.

Some just can't take the weather here, especially if used to sunny days year-round, while others love it. While part of the out-migration might be weather-refugees, part of the in-migration are economic-refugees, due to lower COLs here compared to high-COL areas such as California.

The kids of just about all my neighbors choose to go off to school... Arizona and Southern California are popular destinations... they want the experience... one even went to Hawaii on a scholarship.

I personally find the rain and grey skies soothing and my part of Thurston County can get cold... but snow never stays around for more than a few hours...

Western Washington is a very special place... the Sound, Forests, National Parks and people make it so...

We moved up from Cali last year (san diego). Granted I have only been through the best winter ever here in Seattle, I have no desire to live in San Diego again.

Default Proximity of friends from college

I'm glad I went to college in-state. Many of the friends I made at WSU live near enough to me to easily get together. Had I gone out of state and returned to live in WA, and I'm sure I would have, that wouldn't be the case.

I'm glad my kids left Washington to go to university. No matter how good we think it is here, it is even better to have other experiences, another perspective. I have a ten year old daughter and tell her often that I would be thrilled if she went to university in Ireland or Scotland.
