OP, I think Tacoma is too far away from Seattle for enjoying Seattle nightlife. You should be able to find a studio in Seattle for $950, unless rents have taken a sudden jump. Look around Queen Anne hill, the Northgate area (good public transit and freeway access to other parts of town), Pinehurst (just east of Northgate), and possibly West Seattle. You may even score a 1-br. at your price, in the north end or W Seattle.

There are some nice, daylight mother-in-law units around town for your price, if you don't mind a separate apt. in someone's home. They may be in high demand, though, so have your rental history and credit rating ready when you call, and try to catch those listings as soon as they come up. Check the listings a couple of times/day. Also, much better than Tacoma are the towns bordering Seattle to the north: Everett, Lynnwood, Lake Forest Park, etc. Much closer to the city, much easier drive for nightlife, and better rents.

Good luck!

There has actually been a significant uptick in apartments available for $1,250 or less in Seattle's Northend, especially in Northgate, N. Greenwood/Bitter Lake, Lake City, and the U District, as well as scattered around elsewhere. As Rotse pointed out, if you can make a higher wage in Seattle ($15+ vs $12+?), you can afford to pay higher rent. $15/hr is 25% higher than $12/hr, for instance; $1,250/mo is 25% higher than $1,000/mo.

Why the uptick? Landlords trying to boost rents too much might have been left with empty units. A combination of both more old and new supply compared to other areas, I'd guess, could be in play, along with other factors, such as hiring slowdowns (Amazon?) and job losses/layoffs (Microsoft/Boeing?). Seattle's new $15/hr phase-in is leading to restaurant/bar layoffs/hiring freezes, especially nearer the city border. Also, the area is not as attractive to families, due to lower school scores, compared to further north or south.

Commute is not bad compared to further north (and the Northgate and U District commutes are easy). Transit connections are good to excellent, compared to outside the city limits. Areas are more walkable compared to further north, if less walkable compared to further south. Northgate, Lake City, and the U District have good shopping and dining choices.
