Student ready to move out of So. Cal. to WA and would like advice.
I'm a student looking to move out of So. Cal. and up to Washington. I'm new to this whole thing and looking for advice. I would like to live near or in Seattle, but read about Kent and looked at rent and distance from the city. I would love to live near water, whether it be a lake or sea. Any advice? I don't have a worthwhile job, but feel kind of unsure about quitting without finding one up there. Is the job market tough up there? And is there anyplace else anyone would recommend to a student looking for their first place away from home? Any help would be appreciated.

As far as I know, Kent isn't the nicest of areas. What kind of work do you do? The IT market is very hot right now up here. I don't know about other jobs.

If you have no kids then stick with the hip parts of Seattle, which are also closer to the water
Most of Kent is a real hole to live in, and no where near Downtown or the water

Don't overthink these things. Move to the University District or some other cool neighborhood. Find some roommates on Craigslist and just have a good time. You can always get some job at a coffee shop or delivering pizzas or something like that. Jobs like that are very plentiful.

STATISTICAL INFO provided by City-Data:
Washington Profile
JOBS
The fastest resource is called NWSource, a combined Classifieds from the two leading newspapers in Seattle and a wide radius all around Seattle:
Seattle area jobs, employment advice and information | NWjobs
RENTALS
For rentals in and around Seattle, NWSource is, again, the fastest resource:
http://rentals.nwsource.com/rentals/
When you open that site, you'll see a map and a list of locations you can check. You'll be able to get an idea of prices and amount of space available.
You might also want to check Craigslist.
Western Washington has a vibrant economy; jobs are available in all sorts of fields, as you'll see in the NWSource Classifieds.
I do not recommend that you locate in Kent, as crime against persons there does not make that area attractive.
As a person in their early 20s, you might be happiest at first locating in any of the neighborhoods around Seattle to the east and north, such as: Green Lake, Queen Anne, Lower Queen Anne, Fremont, Ravenna, Ballard, Wallingford, University District, Belltown, Capitol Hill, First Hill. You can find those names on the map at the NWSource rentals link if you keep clicking on the map.
Have fun planning your fabulous new life!! Don't hesitate to come back and ask us questions.
