I'm from Montana and am moving to the puget sound area.

I have been looking at the Kitsap county area because it doesn't have as high of a population as other areas of the sound. I want to buy a house in as rural of an area as I can find, within commuting distance (~30min drive) of a 30k+ city and want to live at least 5min away from any city limits. I've been looking at everything within commuting distance of Bremerton, but, I have spent time in the military and seek to steer clear of all the military bases and the 'happenings' in their surrounding areas.

Is the military presence strong in Kitsap or is it really not noticeable?

Are there any areas you might recommend for someone looking to live in a 'more rural' area of the sound but still be within commuting distance of a 30k+ pop. city?

West of Olympia? East of Everett?

House budget $250k-$350k.

Thanks.

The Navy dominates the view and landscape of Bremerton... I'm not entirely sure what you mean by 'happenings', to answer more than that.

Your budget buys a very nice place outside of Bremerton though, or Olympia. More than Everett.

If you mean:
  • Will you occasionally see people dressed in fatigues and dress blues in various locations? Yes.
  • Will you see signs/banners welcoming home service members after returning from assignments/deployments? Yes.
  • Will you see "Veterans and Service Members" discounts at retail establishments? Yes.
  • Will you see patriotic assemblies during Armed Forces Day? Yes. But there is no requirement to attend.
Beyond that, I'm not sure quite what you mean by steering clear of happenings. Once away from the base, Bremerton seems like any other mid-size city. To me, it's not that noticeable (I work in Bremerton, not for DoD, and live in North Kitsap).

Other events happen around here that have nothing to do with the Navy (e.g. Blackberry Festival in September, Whaling Days in July, Viking Fest [Poulsbo] in May).
