I'm also looking to live in a studio or a one bedroom apartment, and then to eventually move into Seattle (I know that it's a bit out of my reach right now). Nonetheless, Tacoma, does look appealing.
Crime is getting better in Tacoma but it definitely is no Bellevue. The Downtown and Stadium Districts are fairly safe. Hilltop is getting better, just dont walk around in the middle of the night in a dark alley or unlit neighborhood.

That's actually not too bad. How sketchy do the neighborhoods seem? Almost all of them were sketchy in Everett.

Burien is starting to boom, a bit. It has some hardscrabble unattractive areas but if you go to 152nd, one direction it's old Burien which has been refurbished and is darling, you go the other way on 152nd and tons of stores and restaurants. It has a gigantic newer library that's also the city hall. It has a very large park and ride so if you commute by bus you can easily get around. Burien is very accessible to other communities like SeaTac, Des Moines, West Seattle (which is part of Seattle proper) and easily accessible to highways.
