,Hello! My husband accepted a job in Seattle, but he will be mainly working from home and going to the office once a month. Right now we live in Houston, both HATE it, and we want to move to an area that has a small town feel, but you can get to seattle within 1 - 11/4 hours. Right now my husband commutes 1 1/2 hour each way so commute time isn't a huge deciding factor for us. We have 3 school age kids 5,8,14 and good schools are important to us because my 8 year old is in special education. My kids don't play sports, their decision not mine. We love hiking trails, mountains, the ocean (I know it is too cold to swim, just like looking at it lol). I hate the look of strip mall after strip mall and industrial looking areas. I have been reading these boards looking for ideas and I feel like my head is spinning. We also need a 4 bedroom house and max out at 625,000 for a house. We both like what we saw about Gig Harbor and Snoqualmie, and would like to hear any reviews on those areas.. Also, if there are any other cities I'm missing please tell me. I ruled out Issaquah because it sound like a lot of people live there and we don't want to move to another overcrowded area..we'd rather live farther out, but we want to live close to either the ocean or hiking tails/ nature. We have nobody to watch our kids so we can both fly out there , so my husband is going without me to scout the area..and then I will go by myself when he gets back (wish we had family to help). I appreciate any help you can give me, thank you

Have a peek at Snohomish: really neat community, well regarded schools, cool vintage architecture, great cafes and restaurants. straight access out Hwy 2 to Stevens Pass (good skiing and hiking).

Some ideas...

Vashon Island. Great schools, easy commute to Seattle but definitely rural feeling. Example - TheMLSonline.com: 22512 Deppman Rd SW, Vashon, WA 98070

Poulsbo. Picturesque little town (Norwegian themed downtown) with easy access to Seattle via Bainbridge ferry, easy access to Olympic National Park or umpteen ocean/sound beaches. TheMLSonline.com: 10368 Capistrano Place NE, Poulsbo, WA 98370

Agree re Snohomish but watch out for floodplain, same goes for Snoqualmie.

Gig Harbor is very nice and less costly than suburbs east of Seattle, excellent schools, beautiful area.

Gardy, you are right, but there is plenty (actually most) of Snohomish not in the flood plain. Having lived on Vashon, I can tell you that it is a neat place but ferries lines make life very tough sometimes. Gig Harbor is also nice, but more expensive than you might think and in my mind too far removed from decent Seattle access with all of its fantastic cultural amenities. I think Snohomish accomplishes all: great community, cool architecturally, tasty cafes, fun pubs, fantastic mountain access, good home value for money.

Thank you for the suggestions, it is hard to choose one particular area- everything is so beautiful. I have found so many neat houses and my husband wants to make offers lol I wish our current house was sold, but we are still trying to get it show ready before listing it. I spoke with a realtor, thankfully it will sell quick!

I'm curious as to where you ended up? Did you move to Gig Harbor and if so, how do you like it? We live in N. CA and sometimes think it would be better for us to move to a smaller community, a simpler lifestyle for a family. It's a big move and hoping you can give some insight on your experience so far!
