What's an apparently right-wing libertarian doing in a socialist bookstore? Clearly, he was "slumming"...

What puzzled me was why he spent 2 hours in the place, when he clearly didn't like the owner. Such an odd way to spend a good chunk of a day that could have been spent enjoying the sights.

Nah, it was just an excuse to complain about hipsters and "beta males". Ironically, it was done in the hipster beta male fashion of an online passive aggressive comment.

Let the dude Steve be. He came, he saw it the way he did, had some good fun, ran into a few things that didn't vibe perfectly with him. We're all different, clearly. That's okay.

But what is there to discuss? That's what I don't get. It's a discussion forum, but the Op didn't post anything to discuss.

"Here was my day in Seattle."

I have no problem with him "slumming" in Seattle, just so he can tweak some "hipster" (his word, not mine) noses. His problem is that he's not willing to own up to it, claiming that he just happened to wander into a socialist bookstore, rather than simply looking for confirmation of his own beliefs.

Note, I don't necessarily have much truck with died-in-the-wool "socialists" either - although on the left, I'm a Nietzschean, not a Marxist. I don't believe in either/or (Tweedledee/Tweedledum) politics.

I moved away from Seattle in 2003, the homeless situation was getting pretty bad back then. I can only imagine what it is like now.

I had the same reaction as you, Ruth!
I think the post would have been "meatier" if the OP had expressed an opinion or asked some questions about his trip.
Clearly, OP, you aren't of the "Seattle totally sucks!" or the "Seattle is awesome!" mindset, and that's more than OK! Your day trip was a mix of positive and negative experiences - we get that. But overall, what did you take away from it?

So discuss without accusations and paranoia. Jeebus.
