I will be leaving the midwest next week to start a job in downtown seattle near pioneer square. I will be staying in Poulsbo with my sister until my home here sells and I find a new place. Poulsbo looks great other than the 90+ minute commute.

I am looking for a place to live with good schools, affordable rent (~1700 for a 3 bedroom), and less than an hour commute. It would be to tough for a 90 minute commute and then getting home to the kids for dinner and homework. Life would be too hectic. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Burien could work as they have a big park and ride with all kinds of buses that go straight to downtown. West Seattle also.

Too bad your budget isn't higher, Bainbridge would be nice. Perhaps take a look at Edmonds, you could take the Sounder commuter rail to work, it drops right at King st station near Pioneer Square (35 minute straight shot). Edmonds schools are well regarded.

I had looked at Burien but the schools have some very poor ratings. I would love to live on Bainbridge but my income would have to be a lot higher

Consider east Kent/southwest Renton/east Auburn, which will give you a manageable commute on Sounder commuter rail, apartments within or close to your budget, and decent scoring schools. Sounder takes less than 30 minutes from the Kent Station (add 5 minutes from the Auburn Station) to King Street Station, so if it takes you 15 minutes to get to the Kent Station, plus 5 minutes to walk to work, you'll have about a 50-minute commute:

24857 145th Ln SE, Kent, WA 98042 | Zillow

27506 137th Avenue Se # Second Floor, Kent, WA 98042 | Zillow

APT: 3 br / 2.0 ba, $1699 - Pebble Cove in Renton, WA | Zillow

13613 SE 266th St, Kent, WA 98042 | Zillow

31446 118th Pl SE, Auburn, WA 98092 (Auburn)
