I'm confused as it said $24,000 online, but that has to be without tips as they get paid minimum wage + tips. Is it really that low?

It's much more than any other place in the country. $13 this year and $15 per hour next year plus tips.

The answer depends on how you define "Seattle area".

The minimum wage in Seattle is $13/hr for most large employers. The minimum wage in Seatac is $15/hr. For all other localities in King County, the minimum wage is the $9.47/hr ... the WA state minimum wage.

If you take the average of the above numbers, then the $24k number makes more sense. If you work in a popular Downtown Seattle establishment, then chances are quite good that you are making more than $24k. However, that is not a widespread phenomenon. It is highly localized, and therefore averages will be misleading because averages will take into consideration the lower paying waiting jobs (pretty much all places that are not Seattle when you take into consideration the part-time nature of the work) as well as the big ballin' waiting positions.

Another thing to note is that "Seattle area" can mean many things. As you can see, there are several minimum wages in play. Do you mean King County, or King/Snohomish/Pierce counties (in which case, keep in mind that waiters in Snohomish and Pierce counties are facing a MUCH WORSE market than in Seattle proper), or some other definition?

Also keep in mind that servers rarely work 40 hours.

Isn't the min wage different for servers on theory that they're getting tips or are the amounts passed into law applicable for servers, too? Wondering.

I don't know what the new minimum wage law is in Seattle; are food servers included, or are employers allowed to pay below minimum to servers and airport baggage carriers, and others who depend on tips?

All employees have to make the minimum wage, tipped or not.

That's a pretty big difference from some states where tipped employees make $2.50/hr plus tips, here people make $9.47/hr plus tips or $13/hr plus tips.

Not in Washington. Tipped employees have to make at least minimum wage even if they end up making $25 per hour after tips.

The $15 won't get fully phased in until January 2019 for restaurants.

An interesting trend for restaurants is to do away with tipping (and adding a surcharge or rising prices instead, in order to pay a living wage and comply with the new laws).

Why Some Seattle Restaurants Are Doing Away with Tipping

I just went to one of the Ram places and left a tip - there was definitely a spot for it on the credit card slip. Hopefully I didn't pay a 20% surcharge also. This one was in Issaquah, and so hopefully not.

Ok. Cool. Years ago a server at a diner told me she liked working there because she got min wage AND tips unlike other places.

I assume, then, that the wage laws re servers has changed since this long ago convo.
