Any neighborhood areas perhaps east, north outside of Seattle city that have an older more charming housing stock, rather than from the 1960s onward, that are not super expensive ?

Snohomish has lots of turn of the century homes. Parts of Everett have Craftsman homes, and Lake Forest Park has many mid century moderns( 1950's).

Historic North Everett has lovely, affordable homes. There is also another coveted area of Everett called Rucker Hill. Architecturally, you will find American Foursquares (1900-1918), Craftsmans (about 1915-1928), Tudors (generally 1925-1940), and Bungalows (varied vintages).

Define "not super expensive" - around here that usually means less than half a million ...

It is and the property taxes etc that go with it. I am sure the definition of not very expensive would be different if you asked Seattle residents versus residents of say Everett as mentioned by previous posts. Given what the overall metro median income is someone is buying not so expensive houses that fall far below the 500-750k range.

I guess, too, my sticker shock comes from the fact that, although my neighborhood is fine and all, I live in a smaller home and before that, had a small home then, too. I probably should keep in mine that if someone wanted a 2500 to 4000 sq foot house in a pleasant neighborhood, they'd definitely be paying a lot more for it.

Bloom, If you can go to 750k, consider nice historic neighborhoods like Greenwood, North Ballard (Crown Hill, Loyal Heights), Wedgwood and maybe even Maple Leaf. If you are okay with mid century architecture, Broadview is lovely. The difference in home between 500k and 750k is striking. Of all of those, I think the best price to value, evolving area, future good investment winner is Greenwood. It's also just a fun, vibrant place to live. I live really close to there.
