We are currently living in Kentucky and will be preparing life after the military. With a job opportunity my husband is pursing, there is possibility that we will be transferred to Seattle (a few others on list are Portland, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas and DC).

Of course the cost of living and lifestyle can not be compared to what it is here in Kentucky, but before living here we lived in Massachusetts/Rhode Island region and wondering what costs are in comparison.

We are a family of 3 who would be moving up there with an income of 120-140k. Is this enough to live in a safe community with about a 30-60min drive to Seattle, offering a good school system?

Thank you.

Do you know where he'd be working in the Seattle-area? That'll have a LOT to do with where you might choose to live, and what the cost of living will be.

Edmonds, Bothell, and Mukilteo would all be good choices and probably fit in your budget.

He would be working in downtown Seattle primarily, but would be traveling around the state. We would just like to be no more than 60mins to the city. 30mins or less would be ideal, but I know that may not be realistic. These times are for standard drive time and do not account for times that traffic is busier as understand with metro area that closer you get to downtown, and back at end of day, is going to add more time at start of work hour/end of day.

He is worried with the high cost of min. wage that purchase power has been impacted (for instance, he is curious to know what a meal at McDonald's is costing people in Seattle these days)

Edmonds has great schools, a wonderful walkable area called Edmonds Bowl and a commuter rail that goes straight to King St Station in Downtown Seattle in 30 minutes.

Wow! Just Googled and sure looks beautiful, but not sure we can afford housing there. We would like to stick around the 250k range to keep monthly mortgage affordable and not be house poor. A lot of what was under that amount is also under 1k sq feet :/ Any other suggestions you think may work for our needs?

Thank you.

$250k would only be possible in Everett or Tacoma, and it wouldn't be a large home. They do both also have commuter rail to Seattle.

Yeah, you're talking about Everett, Tacoma, or Bremerton - commutes to downtown Seattle will be at least an hour and a half, including 1st and 2nd mile(s). You won't be sitting in traffic, but on a train or a ferry.

On an "income of 120-140k", you should be able to afford more than $250k for a house. What's up?

We prefer to save more money then put it into a house. The only debt we currently have is house we will be putting on the market when we move and then my car which will be paid off next year, two years early. We don't like to always go up to what we can afford as we like to put money away for safety net or vacations, etc. We pay cash for everything, with exception to this house and my current car.

Just because one (or a bank) say you can afford more, doesn't mean you should spend more
