I know you like the suburbs but some of the neighborhoods in the north east part of Seattle, a little north of Magnuson park seem very neighborhoody and family friendly to me. Of course, big yards will be easier to come by in Bothell vs Seattle but a shorter commute might make it worthwhile.
Ok thanks! We don't necessarily need a big yard - don't want to spend all weekend on yard work - but wouldn't mind a small area for the dogs to run around and the kids to play. I'll look into the area you noted. Thank you!

We lived for years in the Olympic Hills neighborhood in Lake City and still have former neighbors/friends there. Inside the neighborhood feels very suburban but there is decent transit on the perimeter. I commuted to the UW, DH commuted in turn to the UW, to First Hill, and to Redmond. It was quite a convenient location, actually.

And I agree with the PP that the NE Seattle neighborhoods around Meadowbrook, say from Wedgwood up to Cedar Park, all feel suburban despite being in the city.

I'm referring to the general area around Lake City (NE Seattle), not Lake City proper (which is busier/denser): Olympic Hills, Victory Heights, Cedar Park (Cedar Heights), Meadowbrook, Matthews Beach, etc. Lots of suburban-ish low-traffic areas.

Seattle does have a generally denser street grid than Bothell, Woodinville, and the Eastside. That is a good thing, in that you have more commute route choices, rather than having everybody being funneled through one jammed bottleneck (522). You'll easily save 20-30 minutes per commute trip.

OK thank you - I will look into those areas.

We just moved right on the border of Lynnwood/Bothell and my husband has had to go to Seattle a few times and had a really horrible commute -- like an hour or so. When we lived in Kirkland, his commute wasn't bad at all. I also think Kirkland is a GREAT area. Some neighborhoods in Bellevue would also be a great commute, great schools, and you could probably find a 3/2 in that price range!

If an 'hour or so' is considered a bad commute then my wife and I are going to love Seattle. I have that today in Cleveland and my commute is less than 15 miles each way. That's nothing compared to what we had in Chicago and Minneapolis.

That sounds terrible Stonepa! My limit is about 30 minutes before I start going crazy, although living here has certainly increased my patience with being in the car !

I bless the day I started at the bank that currently employs me. They give us a paid Orca pass. No muss or fuss with downtown parking.

I'd consider looking at Wedgwood in Seattle - it's one of the more suburban neighborhoods in Seattle and is a bit more affordable than some of the hipper, more urban neighborhoods north of the ship canal (e.g. Ballard, Greenwood, Wallingford, Fremont, Greenlake/Roosevelt etc.)

35th Ave has a small but nice little business district with a grocery store, restaurants, etc. And the commute would be great for your husband by transit or driving.
