My daughter and I are meeting up at SEATAC on late Friday afternoon and she has to leave on Monday afternoon.

I'm thinking we could get to Whidby Island Friday evening and leave Monday, or is there a nicer island spot that is reachable on a Friday evening?

We are planning to stay in an AirBnB place.

Traffic - both ways?

Why are you going to Whidby Island? I mean there's a nice park there but I think that's it.... And what time is Friday evening? After 7 traffic should be okay maybe some traffic by Everett? But if you leave closer to 8 you'll be fine for sure!

What other places are quick to get to and worth staying for such a short period? I lived on the east side for 13 years in the 80s, but my geography from memory is a bit hazy.

Vashon Island is lovely, groovy, filled with natural beauty and closer. here is a New York Times article about it: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/01/tr...back.html?_r=0

Well I'm just asking cause I don't think is much to do there. If you want something scenic maybe take a ferry from Seattle to bainbridge island? Idk I just don't think there is much to do on these islands. At least that I've found. I'd say take a ferry, maybe walk around downtown, and go to some cool parks on this side. Is it nature your into?

Definitely Whidbey. Lots to do - Deception Pass (amazing) and Fort Casey state parks (google them) plus lovely little waterfront towns in Coupeville and Langley. Farmers markets, beach walks, whale watching if you want, good food...

Deception Pass views -

On Friday don't take the Mukilteo ferry; the lineup will be too long. Instead head north on I-5 (use the HOV lanes since there are two of you) to WA 20, then west on WA 20 toward Anacortes, then south over Deception Pass onto Whidbey. Come back via the Mukilteo ferry; if time permits and you're interested, you could tour the Boeing Everett factory on the way back - home of the big jets and the biggest building in the world.

I love Deception Pass too. You could also take the Bainbridge Island Ferry and go to old downtown Poulsbo, a quaint little town to explore. The best place to visit is Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic National Park. For that you would take the ferry to Bainbridge, explore Poulsbo, then drive to Port Angeles, and spend the night. Next morning drive the remaining 45 minutes to Hurricane Ridge and spend the day, then back to Port Angeles or all the way back to Seattle.
The only problem is Friday traffic from the airport to Seattle, and the crowded ferries, wherever you go west. In fact, you could drive over the Tacoma Narrows bridge (Highway 16 off of I5) instead of the ferry, and make the boat trip on the way back.
