The CD has undergone massive gentrification in the last 10-15 years, and it is still trying to shake it's ghetto reputation. There are still little pockets that can be rough, but those are rapidly disappearing (cough Deano's cough). The demographics have changed, blacks are no longer the majority. This statement isn't meant to be offensive, its just the reality of gentrification.

Thank you all soo much...this is exactly the stuff I was looking for. I need at least a 2 bedroom with a den, or just 3 bedrooms. And I would love to be near a park. Close to the ocean is too breezy but close to lake washington I don't mind. My husband works at a restaraunt in beacon hill. He has lived in seattle for a year or so and does have a small idea of the area...I just wanted some outside opinions too.

Close to the ocean wouldn't be anywhere near Seattle. The ocean is 3.5 hours away.

Close enough to Lake Washington to feel breezes instead of wind -- are you a millionaire?

Now you are trying to confuse the issue. Puget Sound IS part of the ocean. She said "ocean", not "open sea".

Ballard would be right by the water yet sheltered somewhat and it's cheaper than along Lake WA that's for sure. Allforcats is right, you would need to be rather "comfortable", as they say, to live there.

You might try looking into rentals in Northern Ballard near Carkeek Park. The park is one of the nicest and most natural in-city parks in Seattle and is right on the sound. It's really beautiful. Lots of trails through the woods, yet plenty of open areas and picnic tables etc. Living near there would not be bad and if you were willing to rent an older duplex, there are some cheaper places to rent.

It's actually defined as a bay by the United States Geological survey Puget Sound - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and is mixed salt and fresh water.

not really, because living anywhere in Seattle city limits, on the sound - is nothing like living ocean front...

I also wouldn't put Ballard, or anything in/near Carkeek as "cheap" but not knowing what style you are looking for, etc it may be "decent".
