Thanks, I know how and where to do it. That is not my question however.

I realize I need to register within 30 days of declaring residency, not just within 30 days of moving here. What if I don't do any actions (listed above) to claim WA residency? Can I still legally keep my AK plates and DL?

Essentially, I'd rather stick with my AK residency for as long as it's legal. And to me it looks like until I do any of the actions listed as residency-qualifying, I don't need to get WA DL or plates. I'm trying to get someone to prove me wrong with facts....so far I haven't seen any.

It's been mentioned that by living in WA over 30 days I would be qualifying as a resident automatically, but this hasn't been backed up by official documents or links to official websites.

Pikabike, I am not worried at all about the issues of real and not real ID's, names, and all of that, but thank you for trying to explain it I am educated well enough on immigration policies and related issues, this is not what I'm curious about here.

Not to add confusion to this...

Friends make it a point to spend 6 months and 1 day in Alaska and this is their State or Residence.

The spend the rest of the time in Washington... been doing this for 15 years and never an issue... even keep a car here at their "Winter" home Seattle.

Are you talking about establishing residency to go to school in Washington, or are you establishing residency for any other purpose BESIDES school?

If you are not going to school, then just living in WA for 30 consecutive days and taking any of the actions listed will suffice.

If you are talking about establishing residency for school purposes, then things get more complicated.

I'm pretty sure it's 30 days after you move here - legal residency has nothing to do with it

Isn't there an Permanent Dividend Fund, that wouldn't be available to a Washington resident?

There is a PFD fund, but I am not getting it because I'm not a US citizen. I don't want to go to school in WA either.

I simply don't want to get a new license and plates if I don't have to.

@Ultrarunner, did you friends bring a car from AK and kept AK plates? Do they use an AK DL while in Washington?

@Tobester, the WA DOL website clearly has these steps written on their website for getting a WA DL when moving:

Overview
Establish residency in WA
Decide if you want a standard driver license or an enhanced driver license
Find out if you can pre-apply online
Visit a driver licensing office
Get your license

1. Establish residency in WA
You are considered a WA resident when you do any of the following:

Receive state benefits
Get any WA state license at resident rates
Receive in-state tuition fees
---

So, if I don't do any of the above actions, am I effectively not establishing residency in WA? And If I'm not considered a WA resident, it sounds like I don't need a WA DL....

Although, it also does say that you have 30 days to register after moving, but the first prerequisite is becoming a resident by performing one of those actions. I am not going to do any of them. So this is where the confusion comes from.

My friends keep a car in Washington with WA plates and Insurance... they have Alaska Driver's Licenses as Alaska is their State of residence.

Washington for lack of a better work is their vacation retreat.

The same Insurance Broker that covers their Townhome also covers their Washinton Vehicle...

They have a 4wd Denali in Alaska... with Alaska plates.

Interesting, because I read that to get a car registered in WA you first need to get WA DL.

Not sure about that...

I know plenty of vehicle registered to business and corps... none of a Driver's License.

We had a neighbor that owned a car with no driver's license... she never drove it... it was to take her around but her caretaker drove it... but it was in her name.

Way off topic... but we have friends that winter in Florida and have a condo and car in Florida... they are Washington residents but bought a cheap 15 year old Toyota to keep at their Florida Condo..

I guess not everyone fits into a neat category...

Then I know tons of Washington Military that live and work here and have plates and driver's licenses from other States... especially Florida is popular.
