Rock train in Auburn, WA??
Hi, I was wondering if any of you smart people knew anything about the "rock train" that is parked on the trains tracks that run parallel to SR-18 in Auburn? It has a weird looking locomotive and then a bunch of cars that are filled with large granite rocks. I've never seen anything like it! Thanks, Greg

It sounds like it might be a ballast cleaner or some other maintenance of way equipment.
Does it look similar to this? Ballast Cleaner

I saw the rocks too. I did not see anything that looked like the Ballast Cleaner from Seattlerain's comment. The rocks were 4 to 5 feet in diameter. Looked like white granite. There were multiple cars full of these rocks.

Rock train
Other than it looked very ancient (like from the late 1800's) I can't describe it very well. I'll try taking a picture sometime if I get a chance.
Yes, the white granite boulders are huge! The cars look like they might be side dumpers.

I have seen that train too, just along the 18 and behind the houses there.
Maybe it has something to do with the over turned train engine a month or so ago in that exact location?

BN Jordan Spreader
Snowplow (or snow spreader)! That is what this train engine is. Apparantly it is one of the most heavy duty snow plows that the railroads own and is designed to break the snow and spread it away from the tracks. I'm not sure what the granite is for but I assume that they had a rockslide and loaded the rocks into the train to carry it away.

Yes, that is a Jordan Spreader! In the winter it is used as a snowplow,in other seasons it is used to spread new rock ballast along the tracks during maintenance work or on the construction of new lines...
Thanks for posting that picture...!
