Oh yes, I agree. I guess I should clarify that I was referring to historical cultural connections and influences, which to an extent still figure in the temperament and culture of the area.
Here is an interesting article on the Skandinavian influence on the area.

I don't like northern Europe AT ALL. I have been to the UK (overcast, expensive and boring) and Germany (too clinical). I have been to Italy, Spain, Greece and Portugal. Ah, yes, people who can emote, decibel levels that are higher, great food, temperate climate, and people who can laugh at life and themselves. From those kinds of people, we get movies like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and "Moonstruck." The bottom line: those films were definitely not possible in Seattle but, rather, in ethnically charged Chicago and New York, where asking someone "What are you?" is totally acceptable whereas people in Seattle would take this the wrong way, cite you for your political incorrectness, get in their Subaru with its rooftop coffin, and drive off. LOL.

I don't think it has ANYTHING to do with the lack of interpersonal skills, thank you very much!
Just as you don't care for northern Europe, I don't care for southern Europe. I don't like loud, in your face people, and that has nothing to do with interpersonal skills.

I view that as a very negative thing. Read my post about "who gets there first" setting the social tone.
With that in mind, I have known a few Italians, Greeks and Jewish people who were Seattle natives. There was nothing even remotely colorful about them -- their zesty ways, as encountered in other parts of the country, were completely absent. It was sad, IMO.
Every Italian, Greek or Jew that I knew in Southern California or the New York area had a definite personality. It made things interesting.

I really don't care whether or not you find it to be negative. I was just pointing something out.

Perhaps way out in the boonies like Duvall and Carnation or the south end like Kent and Auburn, but I haven't noticed a large redneck contigent on the eastside. Mostly high tech workers and their families.

You are very opiniated and that is fine, but your blanket statements are starting to get tiresome.

It's not that I am offended that you are making racial or "un-pc" jokes, I just think they are stale and annoying. This may sound pretentious, but perhaps the generally high level of educational attainment and white collar employment sector predisposes us to higher plane of humor?

I certainly don't like off color jokes or good 'ol boy humor. But I do like people who aren't afraid to make fun of themselves. And by "in your face".....I think that means more aggressive or upfront rather than rude.
As far as PCness goes, when I was growing up it was referred to as being respectful or considerate of others....didn't have a label...but was always taught this at home.
I don't think you sound pretentious.....but the people who are always saying that the Eastside of Seattle is THE only place to live are. This coming from a middle class, college educated, wasp female who happens to drive a Volvo and believes in Botox!!!
Oh, and Frazier reruns are my favorite humor.....(Seattle?....hmmm). And way old SNL.

Don't get me wrong about the Eastside- I am usually one of the very few on this board advocating places like the south end, and *gasp* the city proper. I mainly grew up on the Eastside, and have many, many gripes with it - too many to list.

anytownusa, I asked that you take the discussion to the "Seattle Freeze" thread when you started another thread before this one. You just retitled this thread but the theme and your intentions are the same ...to discuss the "freeze" or how disjointed people feel living in the Puget Sound area.
Again, we are right back to the "freeze" discussion and instead of starting to delete the posts which contain personal attacks, I'm going to close this thread. The underlying discussion of this thread is the "freeze" again and we've said more than once that we'd like to keep it in one thread because this is what happens every time ...we get into arguments and making blanket statements on the way people behave and why. The discussion comes right back to the same theme again.
Please take the discussion back to the Official Seattle Freeze Discussion Thread where we'll allow a little more leeway in spirited debating. Again, we don't want this theme discussed in multiple threads because it's just too difficult to monitor and also becomes redundant in that we're repeating a lot of the arguments we've already had during the past few years in this forum.
Thank you.
