* Old Town Cafe - breakfast/lunch. (Old Town = Bellingham's funky district, near the [old] train station. [The new,
Amtrak, station is in Fairhaven, near the cruise terminal.

Bellingham with its downtown, parks and Fairhaven is somewhat like one single neighborhood in Seattle but much more laid back and with greater accessibility to nature.

When I lived in Bellingham, I always thought of Downtown and Fairhaven as separate and distinct areas. There wasn't much of a bus system then, so you pretty much had to walk or drive between them.

I agree, separate and distinct, but each fairly small. It reminds me of West Seattle, a beautiful Seattle neighborhood that is made up of a few unique parks and shopping areas.

I wish I'd had some of these suggestions, when I visited B'ham a couple of years ago. Instead of checking out some of the attractions, I mostly ended up driving through residential areas, which reminded me too much of Seattle. I did walk through Fairhaven, and loved it, spent awhile at one of the bookstores downtown , and stopped at several organic grocers & the co-op, all of which were interesting experiences. Good grocery scene. Drove Chuckanut coming in. Saw WWU. But overall, the city seemed drab, like Seattle's residential areas. I think living there, one would see it differently, knowing what the city has to offer, like the suggestions here. Wish I'd seen the parks/waterfalls.

Good job, gang! OP, let us know your impressions, after your visit. Feedback is helpful.
