Why? Lots of companies have relocated to Texas in recent years.

Very interesting read - Amazon choosing to continue it's expansion elsewhere could bring some much needed relief/stabilization to the Seattle area housing market.

I could see them opening up a 2nd HQ in Chicago or Austin.

Presumably they're going to want someplace with a built-in supply of tech workers and education resources; remember Amazon isn't all consumer retail, it's also AWS and big enterprise activities as well. I'd also imagine proximity to a major transit hub would be a priority. Places that come to mind include Austin, Raleigh-Durham, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Boston, but those are just guesses.

hmmmmm could the likes of Councilmember Sawant have something to do with this?

That idiot woman had this to say now “Amazon’s quest for a second massive corporate base is reminiscent of Boeing’s ongoing efforts to ship jobs out of the Seattle area and hold us hostage,” said Councilmember Kshama Sawant. “For decades, Boeing executives and billionaire shareholders have carried out systematic economic extortion by pitting cities and states against one another, forcing a race to the bottom for the living standards of workers, and crushing labor unions. Amazon has similarly been using its monopoly power to gobble up swathes of prime real estate, and extract plum deals from local governments led by Democratic or Republican establishments.”

The question becomes how soon will this cool the Seattle housing market?
They'd better choose their location very carefully, if they're considering coastal cities. IMO they shouldn't locate anywhere near a hurricane corridor. They should choose higher ground in a sheltered area. In the future, industry will have to locate away from storm-prone coasts, which would also help entice people to locate away from those areas. This will help mitigate future weather-related disasters in coastal areas, and damage from sea-level rise.

All good cities mentioned, one other I would add is Atlanta due to its growing tech hub in Midtown and one of the top tech schools in the country there at Georgia Tech. Turner Broadcasting/AT&T, Coca Cola, NCR, Home Depot, UPS, Delta, First Data and others are there to poach talent.

Of course most of these cities are on the very large side population wise as opposed to the $1mil + Amazon stated but that could mean better talent and easier to recruit employees who want to live there.

Surprised they haven't started outsourcing to India yet like the other tech firms around here.
