I really wonder how they calculated this?

Having considered relocation to LA or San Diego as we have family in both locations, we have not found SoCal to be cheaper if you are comparing apples to apples like similar sized home, similar quality of school district, reasonable commute.

We find Seattle vicinity affordable. But we are not full time yet.
We are going to 1 car, walk to stores and civic/public buildings.
Senior fare for Sound Transit is downright cheap and fast where we want to get to.
Shop at Asian food stores and Costco and Fred Meyers.

Food is really expensive here, more than Vancouver. And when you consider the ridiculous health care cost...

Soon to be another city's gift, though I wouldn't say it's all Amazon's fault either.

Growing up here, I'm used to high food costs, but it's always an eye opener when I pick up a restaurant tab in other spendy cities. I feel like even SF and NY have more budget friendly options for eating out, even if they're known for being world class food cities w/expensive restaurants. I always notice cheaper grocery prices when visiting family in MA too.

Food in terms of groceries or prepared food at restaurants?

Both. Even eating at Taco Bell as someone said is now expensive.

No way man, I moved here from Pusser Town Texas, and live on Capitol Hill. My costs have dropped dramatically, and I now save thousands every month that I can spend on pork rinds.
